I cant import a CSV file from work

Hi, I am fairly new to autocad outside of school. I am trying to upload a csv i surveyed from work and while trying to import from file i keep receiving an error saying "no point file format match found" I have tried converting it to a txt and a few other file formats. also i have searched the forums and people have had similar issues but the fixes that work for them do not work for me sadly. i have attached the original file. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

You need to create a new point file format that maps the fields in the csv so Civil can use it as it has much more detail than the standard PtNo, E, N, Z, D formats

The file also has a few extra lines in it.  Is this supposed to be a field book file or just a list of points?

I never worked with a surveyor who wanted to try the field book format.  They would all just give us the Point #, N, E, Z desc. format.

I don't know aboout setting up new file import structures in 3d, but you can open your file in Excell, delete/rearrange the columns to one of the standard formats, and save back to a csv file.

Open up the CSV file in Notepad. Select whatever is between the columns and replace with a comma. And strip out any headers or lines with a point name instead of a point number. C3D prefers numbers.

First off. Do you need all of those columns? Most seem to have duplicate or unneeded information. It's easiest if you have a file that can be easily described. Delete the first line as it doesn't contain point information.

Second. You're going to have to use Point Names and let Civil 3D assign numbers. The first column is alpa-numeric. So that means Point Names. Start the Point Import:

Then you'll have to build an import format. You might be able to use both Raw and Full descriptions to bring in 2 of the description columns. In the Import Points window hit the Edit icon then New. Build the format by clicking on each column heading at the bottom and choosing the appropriate item. Then you'll have to edit your file to contain only those columns. It is possible to bring in more columns of information. But that is a much more involved process. I don't see that the last 7 columns contain info that would be useful in a cogo point.

Hi back Allen,

I wasn't able to download his CSV file at work, so I just took a guess (SWAG) at the problem. When I download points from Access in a TSC3 data collector, that's what I have to do to make them useable in C3D.

Sounds like you've fingered the problem. A little Excel work should square things away.
