I cannot select with rectangular select tool.

typically when i click the mouse in civil then move the mouse it creates a rectangular selection tool. today it wont allow me to do this, when i click in civil it immediately changes it to a free select tool. I'm not sure if I inadvertently changed a setting or what but would greatly appreciate advise on how to get it back to normal.

options> selection > window selection method > click and click. Found it! was driving me crazy.
