How to use the grading tool Volume for internal plateau

I created a plateau from feature line to the inside  but when I use the grading volume tools  and change the value the dimension does not change.
Does anyone know how to automatically change?

I am not sure what the significance is if an internal plateau but the grading volume tool only works for a projection grading
