Help with Civil3D / AutoCAD performance !

Hello everyone, 

Specs: (laptop)

intel 13th gen i9 13980HX

32 gb RAM

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080  (latest stable driver)

Hz reduced to 60

Plugged in

Everything is updated, windows, autodesk software, graphics card

Opened empty drawing, tried moving cursor, jerky and slow.

Tried making a simple line - disaster, jerky, slow, skips, stops, blocks whole system...

Tried to make a small surface from point cloud - way too long. Once it is done selecting small surface I waited so long to generate makes my table shake. 

• tried all, on or off hardware acc (basic not advanced even)
• osnap on off, 
• dynamic input on off
• about 15-20 autodesk forums, reddit posts, other google pages and youtube videos
• only C3D is on
• with or without internet
• try reinstalling driver
• loose my mind couple of times
• even selecting something takes ages

What to do? 

OR: 

If really this is it and nothing can be done, can anyone can link-send me a setup of a machine that would be able to run and function in basic autoCAD/C3D enviroment and run basic commands so I can order it or at least compare it that would be magnificent?

Hi Karlo,
Have you tried turning off your Properties Window? Leaving it open is a drag on performance.

long answer: it's insane we even have to say that for such a costly product, but yes, I know about this issue.

Dwg file with many layers?
In some versions of C3D I have experienced improved performance if I select an Layer filter with few layers to avoid that the ribbon layer dropdown searches trough many layers.

The layer list was killing us.  When you have 6 or so drawing xrefed into each other, your layer list can easily climb to 4k or more.  Toss in an architects file or two and you can double that number.  If you open the layer properties box, selecting the All non-XREF Layers filter has pretty much solved all our layer caused dragging issues.

I added a line of code in our acaddoc.lsp file, so whenever a user opens a cad file, the software looks for the layer filter, if its there the software will select it.  Its seamless as it can be and works fantastically well.

It sounds like the best solution for you is a clean install. Your system is well spec'ed to handle C3D. Your issues run deeper than hardware.

Uninstall everything Autodesk, clean out the registry and delete all the leftover Autodesk folders. 

Download a new installer, install the updates and you should be good to go until 2025 release.

No, you do not make this layer filter. The All Non Xref filter auto creates whenever an xref is present. The acaddoc command will just attempt to make that filter active, if the filter is not active it will just blow on by it without changing anything.

As I said, empty file. New drawing, little layers, no layers, any combo. 

No change.

All new softwares are installed a month ago. 

I can do it, but I honestly don't have time for that right now. 

6:50 am, no sleep, most of it was just looking at still screen while C3D did it's mass NASA rocket science level computing when I accidently used my mousewheel and did scroll.

Anyway, it's so laggy and bugs out I can't even select anyhting. Only command list works, cursor clicking (right or left click) is just pointless as nothing happens. Not even able to select anything.

Nevermind... I reread your post! You have done the below.

Have you tried turning off Dynamic Input? It is by far the biggest contributor to lag in a drawing. Also OSNAPS in a Civil Drawing... just a bad time all around.

What about turning off Hardware Acceleration? 3DCONFIG command

What about running a repair or reinstall?

Was it an upgrade or a clean install? There is so much left behind after uninstalling Autodesk products that you need to spend time cleaning it all out before reinstalling.

Your hardware is more than capable, if not overkill for C3D.

It's also possible that there is some other problem with the computer, may people don't clean them out or optimise them in any way. 

As a minimum, I'd suggest running CCleaner, making sure all drivers are updated along with Windows components.

It takes about 2hrs to completely uninstall, clean and reinstall C3D (I've done it to our companies computers recently) and I'd wager that's less time than you have spent on forums. 

I hope you get to the bottom of your problem.
