When accessing help in C3D 2012 a html file opens up e.g. http://docs.autodesk.com/CIV3D/2012/ENU/acad-search.html?query=drape%20image.
Does the help only search online for help files or are help files also on the local disk (in the event of no online access)??

... and another thing:
In C3D 2011 the documentation was available in pdf versions (e.g. Best Practices guide, User Guide) have the pdf's been discontinued in 2012 as it all seems to be browser based now??

There is a new setting in the Options -> System tab, lower right hand section of "help"
You can check a box that says "Use online help... when available."
If you uncheck this box, the help system will pull the same documents from your local hard drive. Interestingly, if you lose internet connectivity, the system will pull the help files locally even though this check box is checked.
....and the pdfs discontinued presumably????

Those documents are up in the support section of autodesk.com:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=16785133
Yes they are - but no pdf versions

So what do you do if your 2012 installation doesn't include the option for online help? See my screenshot. Thanks.
Oh thank goodness for this. Thank you for this information. I've been tearing out my hair trying to work out how to get offline help.
Our security means that all internet access has to go through a virtual desktop which of course my locally installed version of C3d cannot use.
I'm also interest in getting a PDF version of the Civil 3D 2012 User's Guide. Yes, I understand the User Guide is available online at http://docs.autodesk.com/CIV3D/2012/ENU/filesCUG/topichead_d3e15057-0.htm
Autodesk provided the 2011 User's Guide in PDF at http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/civil_users_guide0.pdf and http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=16766674
thanks for the help,
Jeff Jensen
I think you'll be out of luck on this one unfortunately

Jeff:
It goes something like this:
"In order for AutoDESK to maintain these extra low prices we have decided to eliminate the followng, PDFs , . . . . . ."
Quite frankly if you need an answer in a hurry I have come to the conclusion that Google hands it out in seconds rather than spend hours searching the Civil 3D help pages.
OF course this is just my opiinion.
Bill
Google is certainly my first port of call for help queries in C3D these days
