Hatching Issues

Anonymous

I used to have a particular hatch called topsoil (it looked like a bunch of check marks), even before I updated my software, the hatch disappeared from my library. I even found an old drawing that had this hatch and I attempted to copy and paste it into a new drawing that I needed this hatch and match properties, but AutoCAD will not recognize this hatch. I have searched where the hatch files are and I have made sure it is looking in that folder, but it is not working. I do not know how to find the hatch from the old drawing to ensure it is in the right spot.  (Possibly related, we have a company toolbar that has hatching on it, but it has never worked as long as I have been here. When I try to load it, I get an error. I am not sure if this hatch is part of this or not. I know CAD is looking where this file is located, but it is still not working.)

Do you have a screenshot of what "topsoil" hatch looks like?

Qnologi's video is one good way of saving custom hatch patterns.  The other way, and the one I suspect you did, is to add the custom hatch pattern to acad.pat file (located by default in the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\C3D 2016\enu\Support folder).  Notice the versioning (mine is for Civil 3D 2016).  I'll talk about that in a sec.

In that file you'll find this:

Hartch-01.jpg

Notice the that this has the word "migrate" in that highlighted statement.  This custom hatch file will migrate over to the next version if, and only if, I use the migrate tools.  So when I install Civil 3D 2017 if I don't migrate this file then I will not have the custom hatch pattern.  Also,(now back to the versioning topic) if I should uninstall 2016 this folder where the hatch pattern is saved (for 2016) will be removed from my system.  So your options are to migrate automatically using the migrate tool or migrate manually by saving a copy of this file and replacing it with the one that ships with the next version software.

My suspicion is that you had this file set up correctly in your previous software but didn't migrate it.  My hopes are that you still have your previous software on your system so you can copy the file out for safe keeping and manually replace the current file for your newer version software.

However, if you removed the previous version software you are now at risk of losing that custom hatch pattern.  Do you know where you got this custom pattern?  Can you get it again?  Do you have a drawing with the hatch pattern in it?  If so, can we see it.  I think I have an idea on how to possibly fix this but need to test first.

Might I ask which version of CAD you updated from? I think that may be helpful...

I looked at this, but have not tried anything yet. The hard part is I do not know where this hatch came from, I just know that I lost it and I thought I lost it before I even upgraded the software.

I had 2013 and I updated it to 2016. I thought I lost the hatch even before I upgraded because I noticed it, along with several other hatches were missing. I attached a copy of the hatch, but I know there are others. All of this was put into the system long before me so I am trying to find where it is.

A jpg file does us no good.  Do you have a drawing with the pattern still showing?  I want to try to "steal" it from the drawing it may exist in.

I think the method "jporter" stated is the way to go, once you have time, but it would be nice to see what this "topsoil" hatch even looks like, so we have something to go on...

It appears I still have the 2013 files in it, but I do not see that Hatch pattern in the folder. Do you suggest I just copy all of the files for hatching and put them in the 2016?

Apologies, I just thought you wanted to see it. Attached is a CAD drawing.

So does each hatch pattern have it's own file name?  If so then Qnologi's method works best for you.  Do you see your hatch pattern in that 2013 folder?   The file extension will be .pat.  If so, then yes, copy them to your support folder in 2016.  If not, then we're stuck and you can try stealing it from an existing drawing and add it to your tool palette  as so:

Hartch-02.jpg

However, we cannot test this without a drawing.

Crossing conversation there.  Appologies.  Got your drawing.  Let me test now.

I feared this:

Hartch-03.jpg

But look what I found at near the bottom of this page:  http://www.archblocks.com/archblocks-cad-blocks-and-products-previews/autocad-hatch-patterns
Hartch-04.jpg

I also found the same hatch pattern at this site:  http://www.simplecad.com/autocad-hatch-patterns.htm.

Now I've never used them before so proceed with caution.  It might be worth a try.

Thanks, I will check it out. Yeah, that was my fear because it wouldn't let me match properties. I will look and see if there is a file hidden anywhere, but I have no clue since this was done long ago. Thanks for your help.

I'm sorry to revive this three year old thread. But how do you get those squiggly lines in your screenshot borders?

Are you talking about that torn paper effect that I'm using?  If so, it's a software I have called SnagIt.
