hatch problems in civils 3d 2018

I am having issues with Civils 3d 2018 , when I hatch something. It hatches fine but then becomes part of the entity i have just hached and includes all the lines surrounding it as one. (like a block) When i want to change the properties of the hatch I click on it but the Hatch creation tool does not appear on the ribbon. but yet it does when i first create it. Once I have created the hatch there is no way of changing it , even if i click on properties there is nothing there to change. Ive tried looking online to fix the problem but everything i do it doesn work. Can anyone help please before i go for a reinstall again. wondered if it might be a blip in the software. Thanks Julie

Is that a custom hatch? Can you post your drawing? That might tell if the problem is reproducible or if it's just at your machine.

Your image shows you have (2) objects selected.
Click on selection at top of Properties Palette, are these (2) selected object types Polyline & Hatch?

Try selecting the hatch, inside the rectangle, selecting only the solid (hatch).

Does the Hatch Contextual Ribbon now appear as expected?

That is another one of the issues . Once I have hatched the area it then becomes part of the hatch.
The only way for it to be separated from the lines is for me to explode it.
Its not just in this drawing
Its happening all the time in more complex drawings as well
Everything was fine until I ugraded to Windows 10. I don't know if this is something to do with it.

What selected object types are listed in properties?

Check options, selection tab, associative hatch. If its on the border is attached to the hatch. Or it could be something with group settings grouping hatches and borders.
