hatch cut/fill in section views

Hi all,

Firstly please let me point out that I'm very new to using C3D, but not standard acad. So pretty much all C3D functions is a big learning curve.

I've been asked to hatch the cut fill areas in the multiple section views created off a corridor. I have noted and worked out how to do this on the long section (profile view) of my alignment line.

I've spent most of the morning trying to work it out including web searching. So I'm guessing it cant be done or I'm using the wrong terms.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Aaron

Dear Friend,

In this case I think first you need set material calculations for the civil 3d drawings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG08c4LYUok

This link might help you. But you can for search more videos on internet.

Then you can set a material style to cut/fill at section view properties or section view group properties.

Thanks

Thank you for the reply Jeew-m

I did watch the video, and had already created the tin compare surface.

Diving into the specification of the materials was extremely confusing despite working through several tutorials.

At this stage I'll have to leave the question unanswered as the project is moving on despite me not being able to complete the requested drafting technique.

Accepted solution
1. Alignment
2. Sample lines
2.a. Sample sources
3. Section views
4. Compute materials
4.a. Cut fill type
4.b. Select surface(s) to compare in order as directed ... cut or fill condition
5. Total volumes table or...stylize section view to display volumes

Hi Aaron

I too would like to know the answer to this question. I seems the two replies you had so far have misinterpreted your question and have given you a method for creating volume surfaces, something completely different.

Sections Views are similar to Profile Views except profile views are sections along an alignment. Section views however, are sections along sample lines. Personally, I cannot see why section views cannot display cut/fill hatching in the same way as profile views do. Hopefully, you and I will find the answer one day. In the meantime, could I suggest that you simply hatch the appropriate areas using the normal auto cad method. Not the best solution, but if you need to get drawings out the door for now.

Attached was created using @Joe-Bouza and @Jeew-m methods posted. The purpose of cross-sections are quantities, you can use them for other things but volume quantities are their purpose. I'm not sure where a volume surface comes in, those have little to no use in cross-sections. The materials list uses a finish grade and existing grade to calculate the are of the materials and can be used to show a hatch in the areas occupied by those materials by assigning shapes (hatches) to the materials in the materials list.

you have to compute the material and apply a hatching style

Thanks Joe

I have since my last reply found a very good video by Jeff Bartells through this very same forum. However, as yet, I have not managed to get it to work. I used the EG (existing ground) section as the datum and combined (finished ground) section as the comparative. I have given the materials a hatch pattern but so far it hasn't worked. I also, have difficulty finding the panel where the datum etc. is set. It's not in an obvious place. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi again Joe

I have just had another look at Jeffs Video. I think I may have left out a step. It appears that I, in fact have not set my existing surface as the datum. So my question now is, how do I do that?

Hi Winston
Thanks for your reply.
I've been out of the office for a few days and I am just now catching up with all my correspondence
I've also noticed that you have sent a number replies and I've had a quick look at them. But for now I will reply to this one.
Yes, that is the video I was referring to. It is a video on how to produce a volume surface which as you know is something completely different to a section view. Also, this video has rather annoying background music and no spoken commentary. It happens to be that I already know how to produce a volume surface and use them to produce a cut/fill report as well as a table with a coloured topographical styled surface. And, I have used these on many occasions.
Best regards
Ron

My apologies my last post's link appears to have not worked. I'll just post the url. This video does not deal with a volume surface. Rather, it deals with 2 surfaces (EG and FG) and you define cut and fill in Quanitity Takeoff Criteria.

Hi Winston
Yes, this is the video from Jeff Bartels that I have referred to before. Not the "Volume Surface" one with annoying background music.
In this video (Jeff's) he uses the "corridor" as the "datum" surface. Which got me thinking, that I need to use (in my example) the "existing" surface as the datum

I tried to follow this numerous times and it didnt work.

Until today. .....

the catch was in material section style the default setting was for the component display to be off and/or in a large scale. Once i fixed this it worked. Following Jeff Bartels video was great apart from the problem above. That fixed all good now.

I hatch the end areas all the time to ensure my clients know exactly what's whats's in the volume reports.  But doing it today I could not get the hatching to work no matter what, spent hours on it.  Finally found the problem, the underlying CAD command "Fillmode" was set to 0, changed it to 1 and suddenly all the hatching appeared.  Trap for young players!  No idea how the Fillmode got changed but that's one to check if your hatching is not working
