Fatal Errors and slow performance

I have been getting fatal errors using the DIM command on a layout drawing.  We use a model drawing then xref it into the layout drawing for plotting.  While putting the dimensions on this LOD in the current drawing I get a fatal error when using the DIM and then have to start all over.  I looked up the issue and found that I need to use AUDIT, then PURGE.  Neither has helped.  The other thing is this process takes so long but my processor isn't working that hard.  Attached is the
