Having the surface pasting problem with the most helpful error message above (not) i.e. - what does the red circle icon mean? Obviously it can't do the operation but I have no idea why

Still no idea what was causing the issue but I XML'ed both surfaces and inserted into a new drawing and the pasting operation worked flawlessly - yet another ongoing frustration with Civil 3D solved with a workaround...😞
