Hi all.

Recently I had this problem. I worked on a dwg the day before, everything is fine saves and can be opened and closed with ease. The following day I suddenly can't open the drawing on my computer, the file just hangs and loads. My collogue tried opening the same dwg and opened normally. Does anyone have a solution?

Have your tried running a RECOVER on the drawing? Type in RECOVER in CAD then browse to the drawing file and let it do its thing.

.....like @thoma stated, try running a Recover, if that doesn't work, try running a Recoverall.  The next thing you can try is the following.....

  • Copy drawing to your c:\ drive
  • Disconnect your network/server cable from your machine or the wall jack
    • If using Wifi, shut it off
  • Open drawing on your c:\ drive
  • If the drawing opens, run a Purge and Purge everything, Purge Regapps, and run an Audit
  • Assuming this works, save the drawing on your d:\ drive and copy this file back to the server with a different name
  • Connect your machine back to the server/network
  • Try opening that saved file
  • If that works, do a Saveas over the original file

@Thomas-Glidewell, I have tied that, but still the same result. @MSchille-1994, I'll try that. Thanks for the help.

I know this is a little odd, but have your friend open the drawing and confirm that  the viewports are not active then have him save it. Try and open it after that.

Hello all,

the old cad method was to open a new drawing.

a new BLANK drawing; that is no blocks, no styles, no fonts, just the basic layers 0 and defpoints.

then insert the problem drawing as a block, using a 0,0,0 insert point.

then save the drawing.

Now, you can run an audit, -purge and recover.

it usually works.

best wishes,

@CahaLF7RX how does that work with a drawing that contains pipe networks, surfaces, corridors, etc...?

Hello again.
IF, yes the big word IF
The alignments, corridors, surfaces, pipe networks are data shortcuts.
There will be no problems.
IF, these items were created in the problem drawing. That is ok, as you are blocking in the drawing.
And therefore, the styles will come with the drawing, along with everything else.
But you will still need to do an audit, and recover.
Best of luck,
