Dual Monitor Use

We are Currently in the process of switching to dual monitors.

Here is my Question.

We would like to open two different occurrences of the same file on each monitor, with out using the  viewport method is this possible.

Basically we would like to set them up similar to the way Microstation works

The graphic card I have is "HD Graphics 4600".

I doubt if you will like it.

1.  The second one will be READ ONLY.

They both will probably open on the same monitor, no problem to drag to the other one.

2.  You will be using twice the resources (possibly).

You can open two instances of the same drawing in one session of Civil 3D. But as @wfberry mentioned. Only one will be savable under the original name. A kludgy workaround would be to copy/paste changes to the active drawing.

This image show one session of Civil 3D, with a drawing opened twice, stretched across two monitors.

What I usually do is create 2 vertical viewports and then stretch the drawing. That way you can have 2 view of the drawing. Handy for 3D work. You can, of course, create more viewports as needed.

What is it that you plan to do that requires the drawing to be open twice, and makes it so that just using multiple viewports in model space will not work for you?

The company I work for uses paper space for the plan production aspect. They add the dimensions, plan notes, labels.....ect. in paper space.

The cad techs were upset that the dual screens do not work when they switch to the  paper space tabs. They were hoping that the dual screens would work similar to the way Microstation uses dual screens.

Unless I am missing something somewhere, setting wise, they are stuck with the single screen.

I did get the Model space to work just fine and as Allen mentioned above, very handy when working in 3d mode.

AutoCAD does not have the ability to display both model and layout at the same time, or multiple paperspace viewports like you can with modelspace.

You can check out the ideas pages to see if someone has already submitted something.   I have found many instances where it would be nice to see two areas of paperspace at the same time.

I use the  Office365   View > New Window feature a LOT.

It lets you look in two locations of the same file, with full menu systems. Effectively having the same file open twice. It is very very handy. I use it to look at my toc or appendix while also in a section.  For cad it would make an extremely superior way to view plan and profile in the same file without restricting the view space.
