Datum Surface generating incorrectly

Hi everyone,

 

When creating the datum surface for a corridor that uses a depressed median sub assembly the datum surface does not recognize the median, as shown in the attached pictures. Due to this the cut and fill quantities computed are wrong. The datum surface does include overhang correction for the bottom link. Is this problem due to the median sub assembly or what can be done to generate the correct datum surface?

Are you building your corridor surface from links or feature lines?

Can you post a picture of your setup for the corridor surface showing what links/feature lines have been used to create it?

Can you also post a picture of your section with a red line drawn on it to show what it should be? 

 

One of three things is probably happening.

1. The inside edge of your subassembly (the grey hatched area) is a vertical link. Surfaces cannot have vertical faces. There needs to be some sort of horizontal difference, even just 1mm.

2. You are missing a link or feature line from your surface setup.

3. You have triangulation problems with the edge of your subassembly not being recognised as a breakline.

 

Your problem is probably number 1. In that case then maybe try adding a MarkPoint from the Generic subassemblies to your assembly at the inside bottom of your grey hatch area and then move it towards the outside of the assembly (within your subassembly grey hatched area) by 1mm. Unless your subassembly settings allows you to have an offset between the top and bottom of the link which would be an even quicker fix. In this area then your datum surface will need to reference the feature line codes for daylight, outside bottom, new marker point, inside top. This fix will allow the surface to create a near vertical face which should then work.

 

If you post the images requested above and your corridor setup then we can confirm if this is the case or whether it may be something else.

Hi Peter, 

 

I am building the corridor surface from links as shown in the picture below. The datum surface should target the edge of the pavement and then the depressed median, i.e. the red line.

. We have achieved the wanted datum surface targeting  for a different corridor with the only difference being that this corridor uses offset alignments and consequently three different assemblies (left offset, median and right offset).

@bianca.kring  I do think the vertical link is your problem. On the corridor surfaces that worked did you have a vertical link that needed to be followed by you datum surface?

 

Try adding a marker as outlined in my previous post and build the surface from feature line codes that are generated by your assembly instead of links. You can see/set the codes by looking at the properties of the subassembly.

 

Just to be sure, can you expand the corridor surfaces definition so I can see what links/feature lines they are made from, but I do think your issue is the vertical link.

@Anonymous, yes the working datum surface has a vertical link to follow, it follows the top of the green area without any problems.

I did try adding a marker point to the assembly as you have mentioned but as of yet I have not come right with the datum surface.

@bianca.kring  could it be something as simple as the overhang correction setting. On the example that is not working it is set to bottom links. On the example that you say is working it is set to top links.

Hello, it seems that I am having the similar issue and it might be possible that its because of vertical links but I am unable to figure out.
