somehow i lost the ctr L function.... it was working just fine to toggle ortho on/off. F8 still works so i dont understand what happened. I can still use ctr with other functions like ctr F for osnap toggle.
what could be causing this?

Check the CUI and see if it's accidentally been deleted or reassigned.

Maybe I missed something. Did you change F8 to do something else?

OK. Expand Partial Customization Files and Expand ACAD. Select Keyboard Shortcuts.
Alright. I now see that you don't have anything to expand. In that case I'd suggest starting over with an OOTB CUI. If you have too much customization to want to do that. Try using the Transfer Tab to bring the Partial customization files from an OOTB CUI. Otherwise you'll have to add each one manually and I don't know what you had loaded originally.
This may be why you have some distinctions. If you select Keyboard Shortcut's under your Main CUI you'll see what you have loaded.

tried to expand... it does not give me the option. all i can do is select it.
F8 still works for ortho on/off... but i need ctrl L to also work because i use that as a keystroke for my programmable mouse button. (5-button trackball)

What Trackball? I have a key of my Microsoft Trackball Explorer (5-button trackball) programed to F8.

I have a fleet of 5. 3 still working. You can program F8 like this.
