CIVIL 3D - SURFACE PASTE

Hello,

I am using Civil 3D 2017.

I am trying to paste a surface into a composite surface.  I keep getting the attached error.  I have tried changing the surface from a grading object to just breaklines with boundaries.  But the performance is the same.  Does anyone have experience with this error to know what is likely causing it ?Capture.PNG

I got that error when trying to paste something that would be a circular reference. creating a surface2 from coridor (probably the same with gradings) that targets surface1 and then pasting 2 -> 1 - no dice. Created a detatched surface, moved to another drawing - all good.

Cheers
