Civil 3d problems in earthworks modelling

Hi,

I'm having some problems with Civil 3d recently.

I use the software to create earthworks formation sufaces, so is Civil 3d the best software I should be using for this or is there something different to use.

Currently I create the feature lines with my levels and add these to the formation surface, I use the grading tool to grade back to existing ground surface.

This is the area where the problems occur, Civil 3d crashs often especially when there is grading in the file. On many occasions I have lost files as they become unusable as the file will crash if I modify a point in the surface or if I change a feature line level.

Are others having problem?

Are others doing similar earthworks surface but use a different process or in fact a different software?

Any help on this would be a great

Hi @Anonymous, when working with featurelines and grading objects you need to check the drawing for error running an AUDIT often especially if you delete/edit the grading objects often.

To me, it sounds like your drawing has some corruption on it, run the AUDIT command as many times is need it until it returns all 0

Please type ABOUT in the command line and load a pic of what you see

Sounds like you might have some overlapping segments on the feature lines. Type in FINDSITEOVERLAPS and see if it finds any. If it does, the command line will then prompt you to run the REMOVEDUPFEATURELINES. This will usually fix the corruption.

Yes, this is a defect in both 2017 and unfortunately continues in 2018..The case number is below for reference.

Did you run the FINDSITEOVERLAPS on all your sites? If so, did it state that you had duplicate feature lines? You might have to hit the F2 key to show more text. If it does state this, it will also say to run the command REMOVEDUPFEATURELINES.
