Cannot edit cogo points in an XRef using 'edit XRef in place'

I have a .dwg of cogo points and their respective labels, let's call it 'points.dwg'. I then Xref 'points.dwg' into another .dwg file and try to 'edit-xref-in-place' 'points.dwg' to try and move the labels.

I am not able to do so.

How do I work with cogo points when they are Xref'd into another drawing?

I know data shortcuts are a thing, but I don't think you can create a shortcut for cogo points.

Therefore, how can I keep cogo points in one .dwg file, while being able to work with and modify them in another .dwg?

Use "Open Xref". This command will be on the  right-click menu after you have selected the xref on screen. Here you can modify the drawing's point database. Save. When you switch back to the destination drawing, you will be asked if you want to reload the modified xref. It's pretty slick.

I highly recommend that you NEVER use "Edit Xref in Place" with C3D drawings. As @tcorey noted, open the Xref to edit it.

The problem is, I have to edit XRef in place as I need to move the labels so that they do not overlap any of the other elements in the drawing. If I open the XRef and edit, I don't know what the labels might be covering.

While I appreciate this response, this does not solve my problem. I am trying to move the point labels so that they do not cover any element on the drawing they are Xref'd into. If I open the XRef, I would not be able to see where to the move the label so that it does not cover any element.

If you currently have this scenario:

Dwg1 xref into Dwg2 and need to edit Dwg1 as it relates to Dwg2, make sure the xref is an Overlay xref, then xref dwg2 into Dwg1, also as an overlay. Now you can edit Dwg so the points don't overlap objects in Dwg2.

If Dwg2 is also an xref in other drawings that need to see Dwg1, after you make your edits be sure to detach Dwg2 from Dwg1 then change the Dwg1 xref to an attached type instead of overlay

I don't think you can edit any civil3d object that way
