block editor - objects "not in current space"

ACAD2017 C3D

file version: 27.0.301.0

product version: R21.0.301.0.0

I am going thru our template updating things and eliminating various layers we do not use.
I am to the point where I have layers that are in blocks somewhere, so I am trying to clean up the blocks and there are some that will not delete or purge.

I open a block

I select all

I then try to erase and get this dialog:

Command: E
ERASE
Select objects: all
841 found
841 were not in current space.

As you cannot leave modelspace in the block editor, I need a solution to either delete or purge this entire block or erase the misbehaving items in the block.

I have tried creating a new drawing with just one element ( a circle) and inserting it to overwrite the existing block, but when I edit it, the objects "not in current space" are still there.

Thank you,

Sounds like the block was created with elements or references from paperspace and model space.

If this is the case you may be better off redefining it.

I have tried redefining by creating a new block with the same name and inserting a new block from a new drawing, and they still contain elements "not in current space"

Oy!
