Batch change polylines elevations

Hi there,
I have a certain task I need to do and trying to figure out the fastest way to do it. Lets say I have several dozen polylines and I need to add certain elevation to each one. I would use them as contours in the next step for creating surface. Trouble is that I will have to change elevations to the whole set of polylines dozen of times. Is there way to get some sort of table which would list all of my polylines with column stating their elevation and where I would be able to change elevation to whole set of polylines by copy/pasting column with values from excel for instance?
Thanks in advance !

I missed a step in the workflow.

Prior to generating links between the cross sections and the database, you
have to create a link template. In the Map Task Pane, Map Explorer tab, Rt
click on the Link Templates folder and click Define Link Template. In the
dialogue, for Datasource, select your Datasource for the Access data. For
table name, select a contour table in the database. Remember you can create
a table for each study output and we can create links to any or all of the
tables. In the Link Template field, type a name for your template. You will
want to give it a name that will help you identify which table it is linked
to (i.e. Output table 1, etc.). For the Key Selection option, toggle the
field that represents the cross section ID number. Leave any others off. Hit
Ok. Now you will see the link in the Task Pane.

From here you will go to the next step which is to use the Setup pull down
and "Convert Object Data to database links..." task. Your newly created link
template will be available when you select the Define button in the Target
Link Template part of the dialog.

Neil, I just created my first .mdb database by importing .xls. Worked like a charm. Thank you very much for detailed instructions. Late in the evening now so will try follow all the steps tomorrow.
Thanks !!!

It is difficult to explain such a complicated process without graphics or
videos so I hope you can find your way through it.

FYI you can import CSV files direct into the MDB so don't bother making XLS
files first. Also since you are new to Access, be aware that a single MDB
file can contain many tables, each with unique fields and records.

I believe you can delete the old tables and replace them with new ones from
imported data without affecting the Map links, as long as the table names,
structure, and field names don't change.

Best wishes.

Well you have done a great job explaining Neil. More than I hoped for. I got stuck again at one step though. When I run query to draw my cross sections from attached file it does work - however it assigns ID numbers as elevations. I am attaching the screen shot of what I have chosen at alter properties dialogue. I didn`t get to choose second column from my .mdb table. I have two columns there, one called "ID" and another called "Elevations" It seems I missed the part - where to tell software to read from that second column from the .mdb table.
If it is too long to explain I wouldn`t want to bother you no more and I will try to dig more into Map 3D.

You are very close to getting this figured out. The problem appears to be
your Link Template is not connecting to the table properly. You should see
all the fields in your table available in the Query properties dialogue.
You'll need to open the cross sections drawing, load Map Task Pane and
double click the link template to open the table. You should see all the the
fields in the table. Also, the object data and linked data should show up in
the properties dialog for the polylines. If you do not see the linked table
data in the properties then your polylines are not linked properly.

Please review your workflow for linking to the table and if you need help,
post again.

I think I know what is causing the problem. Please try this: Open your query
drawing, load the Map Task Pane to the Map Explorer tab and drag and drop
your MDB file onto the task pane. This will establish the datasource
connection. Then see if the table fields show up in the query definition.

Thanks. Still didn`t work though. Adding .mdb to the task pane worked but table field Elevations didn`t show at query definition. I attached screen how it all looks like. Will try do all over again.

Go back to the souce drawing and use the same method to drag and drop the
.mdb into the task pane. This will create a new datasource connection.
Create a new link template to this datasource and generate new links. See if
it makes a difference in the query dwg. If it does, delete the old links and
template and datasource so you don't get confused. You can delete the links
and link templates from Map but you can't delete the datasources so you will
have to do those manually. To find where Map is storing the datasource
connections, see the ACAD file path options.

Hi Neil,

I did everything all over again. started with the clean new .dwg file and clean new .mdb database, and did everything all over. I still seem to have the same problem. In the querry I only get to choose ID field, and so I end up with elevations being equal to ID.

I am wondering weather in this step you described I should toogle both "ID" and "Elevations"?

You shouldn't need to toggle both fields. All you are doing is specifying
the field to use for the link to the database. It worked fine for me. I do
think the problem is in your datasource connection as I was able to produce
the behavior you are seeing. I'm just not clear what you are doing that is
causing the problem. Did you try creating a datasource by dragging the .mdb
to the taskpane?

I'll review my instructions again when I can. In the meanwhile I suggest you
review the process for creating links to a datasource in the Map help system
and tutorials.

Yes I did everything that you suggested. Still I get only ID offered at property alterations dialogue. As attached.
I think datasource connection does work because it did pull out IDs from the database and assigned them as elevations, just as I told it to do in query.

I attached pic how everything looks like after the query. In properties you can see that assigned elevation is equal to ID.
However, I red marked link templates that don`t seem connected.
Link template was created in original drawing and not this one where I am running a query so that is why maybe?

In the dwg that you are querying into make sure the mdb file and link
template are connected, in your screen shot the link is not connected (that
red X).

Murph,
The thing is that before I ran the querry there was no Link Template in the Map Explorer at all. I am attaching the screen.
The thing is that Link Template was created in orriginal .dwg called db1. That .dwg is attached in the .dwg I am doing query in.

In the original dwg, check that the link template is working, you should be
able to open the link template. Right click on it in the task pane and
select View Link Table. Then select a few records and see in you get the 1
Object Found Matching 1 Selected Record at the bottom of the table data
view. Also when you do attach that dwg to the new dwg make sure it is not
opened. If the link templates work your Property Alter Expression dialog
should look more like this.

The RED X in yours shows it is not connected/working.

Can you do this: open your source dwg (the one with the linkedpolylines).
Pick one of the polylines and show the properties dialogue. You should see
properties for Object Data (OD Group) and Link Template (LT Group). Can you
show a screen cap of that? Also show the Task pane with the linked tables
and link template expanded.

In the image you posted earlier I see a different data table in the task
pane in your query dwg. Can you make sure to attach the datasource you show
in this screen capture to your query drawing?
