AutoCAD Civil 3D Doesn't Have VISRETAINMODE

I am trying to get my xrefs to work properly. What I need is for them to only display the colors and linetypes that I have specified in the base file so I have VISRETAIN set to 0 but when I reload by xref, any xref layers i previously had frozen become thawed. I have read on here that VISRETAINMODE should help me pick and choose what is overridden when VISRETAIN is turned on but AutoCAD keeps telling me that that command does not exist. Is there a setting that I am missing?

From the help file:

"VISRETAINMODE (System Variable)
Applies to 2018.1 Update and later Controls the behavior of the VISRETAIN system variable when it's set to 1.
Product Documentation | 2018-01-12"

Actually, I'm getting ahead of myself.  What version are you actually on?

VISRETAIN is a setting.  It is either on or off.

On (1) means that settings in the current drawing are saved despite what happens in the base drawing.  This is all settings including ON/OFF, Freeze/Thaw, color, plot style line weights etc.

Off (0) means that all settings are controlled by the base drawing.

You might be able to use layer states to get what you want.

The about window says "Product Version: 12.0.842.0 Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018"

Open your Autodesk Desktop App and apply the available updates.  I have the .2 Update installed and visretainmode comes right up.

You need to set XREFOVERRIDE to 1.
