Anybody here use PA GIS data?

If anyone knows what is going on with PA GIS data I would love to hear about it.

Orthoimagry says it's in PA83-SF (NAD 83 state palne south) feet. I pop it into a file with the same coord sys using mapiinsert and everything scales 3.2 times larger....metric?

County boudaries, roads and water courses imported from shp file say the shp has a coord sys of antartica98.LL assigned. Nothing imported scales correct or is in proper coords. Why would PA use antartica??

Those files are good. Thanks Dave. Which source did you use?

Those streams and roads line up nicely with my NJ maps. The counties and municipalities are out in left field.

John,

I think I got waterways here:
http://pa.water.usgs.gov/infodata/gisdata.php

And roads here:
http://www.pamap.dcnr.state.pa.us/pamap/data_source.aspx

At least I think that's where I got them. (Every day is a new day.)m1716.gif

John,

Thanks for the Solutions and Kudoes. That's a record number of them for one thread!

"County boudaries, roads and water courses imported from shp file say the shp has a coord sys of antartica98.LL assigned. Nothing imported scales correct or is in proper coords. Why would PA use antartica??"

I figured out why that was happening. The PRJ file was whack:
GEOGCS["NAD83_GEO",DATUM["D_North_American_1983",SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6378137.0,298.257222101]],PRIMEM["<custom>",0.0],UNIT["Degree",0.0174532925199433]]

Where it said "<custom>" it needed to say, "Greenwich". Making that little change completely fixes the Shapefile.

Thanks Dave. There are still issues with the counties and municipallities. I don't have them yet. The prj file edit seems to work if I keep my dwg file in NJ NAD 83. Everything seems to scale but the location is wrong. PA does not abut NJ.

If I change the dwg coord system to match the LL83 everything scales wrong and is located at the origin.

THe attachment shows the location issue. The red is the bucks county roads. NJ counties xref in at the coorect location. PA counties are wack.

Todd I hate to put you out but I could really use counties and municipalites. The counties are posted above. THe municipalities are here.

http://www.pasda.psu.edu/uci/MetadataDisplay.aspx?entry=PASDA&file=PaMunicipalities2015_01.xml&datas...

For reference, the roads and streams that Dave posted are in the corrrect scale and location.

Can't thank you enough.

John,

Just go to the Penn State Geo Page called PASDA. Just do a search on Google for PASDA. Will take you right to the Site. You can get most of the State shp files from the portal. Now if I understand correctly, your looking for Bucks County Info. Bucks County keeps a tight rein on their GIS Data Set. Since they paid a lot of money to implement the GIS, they charge exorbitant prices for the shp files data.

Here is the link for the contour shape files: http://www.pasda.psu.edu/uci/SearchResults.aspx?shortcutKeyword=topo&searchType=shortcut&sessionID=7...

Here is the link for local & state roads: http://www.pasda.psu.edu/uci/SearchResults.aspx?shortcutKeyword=base&searchType=shortcut&sessionID=2...

Here is the link for county and municipal boundaries: http://www.pasda.psu.edu/uci/SearchResults.aspx?shortcutKeyword=base&searchType=shortcut&sessionID=1...

Here is the link to their aerial photography: http://www.pasda.psu.edu/uci/SearchResults.aspx?shortcutKeyword=aerial&searchType=shortcut&sessionID...

Each link will show you the different data sets available, where they came from, what year they were done etc. If I can provide you with any additional info, let me know.

John,

Just make sure your drawing is set for NAD83 State Plane Coordinate South Zone. As long as you have that correct the data files will come in where they are supposed to in real world.

Thanks Nevin. I have the roads and streams working fine. The municipalities and the counties were not exported to shp correctly. In my last attachment to Dave you can see the results.

John,

Both these Counties and Municipalities Shapefiles Transform nicely for me. What is your workflow?

Todd, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, etc and so forth. :) Dave, I think FDO works but I'm trying to avoid it. I am using mapimport.
