Aerial Images shifting in Layout View

Civil 3D 2019. I have created Plan and Profile sheets for a proposed waterline project. Working in model space the imported points for existing power poles are on the baase of the poser poles. When I go to my Layout tab to view the actual Plan and Profile sheet, the aerial has shifted in the plan viewport.Layout Plan.PNGModel space.PNG

I ran into a similar issue many versions ago and I created new drawings within the current version year and saved them and then copy/pasted all the content from the other drawings to the new drawings. This seemed to help the issues with the image in that instance. I know it seems trivial in the grand scheme but make sure you're not reusing older drawing files with these newer versions. Start with a new blank drawing and pull in styles and settings from your templates to help establish a new 2019 version of what you're used to.

Also, what type of image file is in the drawing? We've had issues with certain types, so I'm curious if it's a geotiff or are you using Autodesk's images via Bing, or maybe ECW / MrSid? Good luck

You don't happen to be using polygonal viewports?

Thanks for your input. These are new drawings created in 2019. However I did copy clip some older Google images into this drawing file.

I use Mview and create a rectangular viewport. I do not use the view Twist. I use UCS follow and create views in model space that I can access with DDUCS. 95% of our work is plan views for proposed waterlines.

This a Google Geotiff that I obtained using Global Mapper. A few weeks, after I grabbed these images, Global Mapper no longer had access to Google Images. Bing images are pitiful, muddy, illegible blotches but I may be stuck trying to use them. This is not drawing specific. We had the same issues a few weeks ago. I did find that job could be plotted if I made a PDF first and plotted from PDF.

After more research. Opening past projects with Google Earth Images and seeing these images are also shifting in the layout viewports. I'm moving on. Bing images are totally unacceptable in quality. We will be purchasing Plex.Earth so we can access and save georeferenced Google Images. Just hope they aren't getting nixed by Google and Autodesk like GeoMapper.  I cannot produce quality work without quality images.

I don't use google earth images, but I suspect changing the UCS could be the issue. We stay away from ever messing with the UCS.

I got away from using the geomaps, google images and geo tiffs. I started using the ArcGIS plugin and have been loving it. The only downfall is you have to have an ESRI account which means another expense.

In past versions, I've experienced Aerial photos appearing to shift in the viewport while in paper space, especially when zooming and if viewport had a twist (dview). Everything plotted fine though, it appeared to just be graphical.

I experienced this issue years back when either I was using a very large high res image via mapiinsert and/or FDO connect via mapwspace to that same image.

I dug up my old post HERE in case it could help.

We do have one ESRI seat. If you use the plug-in does the image save onto your file server or does access work like it does with BING? I could ask our GIS operator to grab the images that I need and place them in my projects.

It works like a data connection so nothing is stored on your server. You will need to download the ArcGIS for AutoCAD plugin, login then you will be all set. No need for you GIS guy to send you images.

For info and download of the plugin click here.

That is not acceptable. We archive older projects and it may be years before we need them. We need aerial images that reflect conditions at the time we were designing. We also provide
drawing files to our clients who may not have access to ESRI.

Not sure if this is applicable to you guys.

But my typical work flow when not using GIS or CAD basemaps is to combined / mosaic them in GIS if they take up multiple quads. For some reason, when I insert the aerial "mapiinsert", it shifts the aerial up for whatever reason in CAD leaving all the default settings on, however when I turn off "Modify Correlation" which appears to be a setting that allows you to pick insertion and scale it doesnt scale it up for some reason and comes in where it is supposed to. This setting is a box that is prompted right after mapiinsert. Course your aerial needs to be geospatial referenced / projected correctly. Hopefully that might help.

Hi Everyone,

Just a point of clarification: changing the UCS in a viewport is not an issue. It is done daily by me and my teams and does not cause the issue reported.

Still trying to think of a solution to the original posted question regarding moving images.

I think the issue reported by the original post is a viewport issue. I think the viewport(s) behaving badly need to be reset to TOP View, 2D Wireframe Visual Style. Switch to a different View and to a different Visual Style, and then set back. Try that and see if the issue is fixed! Good luck 🙂

I have a teammate experiencing this original reported issue, inside Civil 3D 2018. When the viewport is rotated, the image shifts. When viewport is not rotated, the image behaves with zero shift.

I replied above and clarified that UCS rotate in viewport does not cause this original reported issue. I know this because UCS rotate is a regularly used workflow for me, with images.

So, I now think we can narrow this down to image type in a rotated viewport. I have done design on a long linear commuter rail project here in Northern California, and we have many UCS rotated viewports with geolocated imagery in the viewports, behaving perfectly. That behaving imagery is .tiff. Also, non-geolocated imagery behaves, in .jpg format.

In the original reported issue, that imagery behaving badly is geotiff (didn't get the exact file extension format). Also my issue is with .sid.

Possible solution: I converted the .sid image to .tiff, and the image in .tiff format now behaves perfectly in a rotated viewport.

Having the same issue using 2018 vanilla cad (not c3d) with .sid background. Seems to be a consistent shift in all viewports so my workaround solution was to mspace from a layout viewport and just move the image so that it lines up (in paperspace). Looks terrible in modelspace/vpmax, but everything prints/pdfs fine. Not a perfect solution, but it gets the job done.

Hi @Netelaana , thanks for sharing the workaround!

Based on my experience, the issue occurs when the viewport is not north-oriented (deview/twist). However, this only happens if the computer has low-quality graphics specs. If you try to rotate back to north or use a different graphics card, there will be no problem.
