Aerial displays faded in layout viewport, but prints unfaded.

I have a background aerial that shows fine in the model tab, but displays faded in the layout tab viewport.  The layout plots without fading.  How do I get the display to show not faded?  I have clipped the two images that make up the background aerial.

There could be a number of reasons why the images look faded on a layout but look OK in model and are OK when you print. It could also be two or more things occurring simultaneously.

• How did you 'add' the images to modelspace? What command or procedure did you use? 
• Did you add the image to another drawing then add that drawing as an xref to your working drawing?
• What are the properties shown in the properties palette when an image is selected?
• What format is the image? jpeg? tif? png? or something else?
• Is TRANSPARENCYDISPAY=0?
• Is XDWGFADECTL=0?
• Etc. etc., etc.

I just looked again, and it isn't faded, it is a negative of the image in the layouts.  I have five and all are displaying the same.

It has something to do with the images being clipped because the problem went away when I turned off the clipping.  They are too large to work with if not clipped, but I can do small edits that I need to see the image and then turn the clipping back on.

What's the image format?

Black & white or color?

It is a color airphoto in geotiff format.
