Add a background map

What is the best way to add a map in background of my survey, beside Geolocation in Civil 3D 2020 with the best resolution possible?

Hi @arpenteur ,

One option is to use MAPIINSERT if you have geo referenced image. Just be sure you are using the correct coordinate system.

That would depend on what kind of "Map" and what format you have it in.

Here is an image of what I see right now in Geolocation Tab with the right coordinate system.  My problem is that I have an O/S in the image and also the image is not sharp (clear).

Basicly, the image is to help me to draw the kines at the proper area.

I'm not familiar with Digital Globe. My suggestion would be to find a better source for an aerial image. Try local, regional and national GIS sites.

If using MAPIINSERT make sure the insertion scale (UNITS) are set to unitless or it won't come in at the correct location.

That's Bing imagery you have uploaded. If you want to use georeferenced images that have better resolution, you'll need to use a third party software such as Plex Earth, which you'll have to purchase. You can find it, along with various other apps in the App Store. In the ribbon go to Featured Apps tab=>Connect to App Store Icon. For Plex Earth, search for 'Aerial Imagery' while in the search box.

You can also download free aerial imagery from online sources. Here is an example:

1. In search criteria tab choose, 'Use Map' then zoom in to your area of interest. 'Frame your image' in the view you see on your monitor. On the web page, you can ignore the other settings and stuff, it's all noise.
2.  On the bottom of the panel that's docked on the left, click Data Sets.
3. Expand Sentinel, click box next to Sentinel, then at bottom, click RESULTS. Choose your image(s) and click the download icon.

You may also, if you wish, go to Additional Criteria tab and select cloud cover. The smaller the percentage, the less cloud cover  your image will have. These images work well for big, wide areas were you are zoomed out far, far above your site. If you want an image for a small, tight area like the asphalt driveway at your house between your garage and sidewalk, then this type of image may not be feasible. You may also try other images besides Sentinel. Sentinel seems to be the most current and seems to provide the clearest imagery. The Sentinel images are FREE and you can't argue with free.
