If anyone has been trying to use the 12DA import extension for Civil 3D. Read on!
I have been having problems importing latest 12DA files. It doesnt import anything for some reason.
A simple change to the 12DA files encoding fixes the error. Get NOTEPAD ++ Download Here
Old 12DA files encoded with "UTF-8 without BOM" will work. However new ones encoded with "UCS-2 Little Endian" won't convert them and save as shown below. All working again!
Kapanther 🙂
That's good to know!
Thanks for sharing the workaround!
No probs...
Wow this is great. Saved this way it actually allows you to open new version 12da projects in old 12d model versions also.
nuts... double bull bonus!!

I'm trying this importer for 2015, have re-encoded but seem to not work for me.
Just trying a 4 string Super Alignment String and Leaving Import option as default
So something simple
Getting errors of "mismatched number of H geometry records" what ever thats means.
Cheers Rob
Attached the file if you want.. I will take a look.
You did press "convert to UTF...
rather than "encode as UTF.
There are still some issues importing 12DA super alignments though. The importer probably needs some updating!
Just a quick note that this solution only really works for 12D V10 it will not work on V11 files. I believe an update is been worked on as we speak..
I'll post more here and on my blog when there is an udpate..
Hi,
I am trying to import some 12da data in Civil 3D2016. The version that we use for 12D is V11 and as you say in the previous post, your solution does not work for that version.
Do you have any update to solve this problem?
Thank you!!!!
Almudena
Well you have two options.
Option A
Write out to the old 12da version (in the output menu down the bottom you will see there is a "12da old version" option there somewhere)
Option B
Write to a genio file. I have found this works better. Make sure you tick on option to convert super alignments etc.
Regards
UPDATE - For versions 2017 adn greater of Civil 3D. The importer has been updated and you no longer need to use this encoding trick.
Note you may need to get the 12d operator to export the file using 12da old version though..
Addiional note. 12DAz files are just a zip file that contains a 12da file. change the extension to zip and then unzip the 12da file.
I've been trying to use this converter both ways (from 12d v12 and from Civil 3d 2017 & 2018). But having no luck at all.
Are you saying the version of 12d isn't compatible with the Extension? and I might have to roll back to Version 10 of 12d?
So would this mean that the surveyors I am sending 12da files to would need to have 12d version 9 not 12?
Thats if I were to export the old file as I don't have either of the Genio or LandXML export licences.
