Silicon structrure thermal results going bad in CFD Flex 2016

HI all,

 

I have added the "boundary conditions" with heat flex, Just wanted to study the how much heat transferd in different parts of the silicon structure.

 3 Volumes I given boundary condition as : 70 W/mm3, and another 3 volumes as :700 w/m3. The results should be controlled .. within 50-70 degree centigrade in different parts of the silicon structure. But it is going beyond that..

 

I am attaching my report. as well my cfd flex file. Can anybody help me where my Boundary condition or meshing is  going bad.

You have a few options

 

  1. Share the CFZ and I'll take a look
  2. Suppress the air and just assign a film coefficient (5W/k/m2 is a good start) to the outer surfaces of the solids
  3. Stick with what you have and get it working - it should be pretty simple 🙂

 

What is weird is that your outlet temp is 25C also - did you enlarge the air domain as we said already?

 Hopefully, we are almost there. But still, preliminary results are not yet produced.

 I need your great help to proceed with this. I am eagerly waiting for your suggestions. we can do or how can we tune CFD tool, for getting our expected results.

The airbox is still small right? Change it to something like this:

Also, I know we spoke about dimensions before but I am still not totally sure - is this really 700m high?

Hi Jon,

 I am facing the strange issue of "Queued" since last night in my laptop. 

 The CFD Flex not running as attached, snapshot. any solutions for this " I am using " LOCAL" as my solver computer.

 

Any help on this ?

I would stop/uninstall/reinstall the CFD Server manager (be sure to run it as admin for this to work 🙂 ).

Hi Jon,

 Thanks for your reply. I "repaired" and re-simulated. It was working not in "queued" state. 

anyways, To summaries till now.

 

1. I have increased surround air box, 2d +1d(my_object) +3d=6D in length as per one of the article.

2. I also suppressed air (in 1 experiment, as per your advice). Gave the "film coefficient (5W/k/m2)", for 4 sides of the airbox. Put 1 as its outlet with pressure gauge as 0. 

3. Did simulations, with "refinement of meshing"(edges +surfaces). else it was stopping the simulations,  with just "auto mesh".

 

Now results are attached. The docs has the other details, what I did in the experiments. 

 

still, the results are not Correct. Could you pls advice further,?

1) OK, it's a bit long but OK, it should work 🙂

2) Why? Leave the air meshed, it must be meshed to be considered in the experiment. It was suppressed before and this is part of your problem

2.5) Please follow the guide I shared. You need Temp and P=0 on the bottom of the airbox and a P=0 on the top, nothing more for now

Hi Jon,

 

The guide you had referred,  says that 5X in X dir, and 8Z in Z direction of the ext.valume.(air box)

Now I re-created the ext.valume air, and simulated with below BCs:

1. all 4 sides of the ext.volume, as film coief- 5 w/m2.
2. 2 inlet/outlets as pressure gauge as 0 Pa.
3. Total heat generation of air mesh as 22 Watts.(room temp)
4. Internally 3 volumes as 70 watts: Total heat generations.


Now, also I am assuming, the results are not correct?. Pls, find my report.

Do we need to apply "slip/symmetry" on air meshes?
Pls advice further.

Those dimensions aren't always fantastic.

 

Here are my points. You MUST have a temperature at the air inlet, as per the guide and mentioned a few times above also 😉

 

1. all 4 sides of the ext.volume, as film coief- 5 w/m2 - why? It's OK although not super necessary
2. 2 inlet/outlets as pressure gauge as 0 Pa - You must also have an Ambient Temp on the bottom surface - the air inlet or nothing will work 🙂 
3. Total heat generation of air mesh as 22 Watts.(room temp) - Why? What is this doing exactly and what is adding heat to the air? Try without this for now, it doesn't yet make sense to me
4. Internally 3 volumes as 70 watts: Total heat generations. OK, cool 🙂

Hi Jon,

 I am sorry, I forgot to add surface temperature" as 25 Degree for the inlet, I am extremely sorry. I could do now.  

But now, after doing all BCs as guided. The issue is the Tool goes in "Queueing " and else it goes into " Meshing errors ", after refinement  as in the screen shots, and the tool goes on repeated printing as below... Could you pls advice what could be best values  in "refinement in my case ? as per screen shots ?

 I did reset the "meshing" parameters, with that I did use the another "support" CFZ file and re-started. Hope older file is corrupted. Somehow it ran this time. The result is attached. Highest temp I got is 21 C, in 70 Watts applied structures. Is that not

Is that not propagated well in the Copper wire?  I made red colors in the doc (attached), I wanted that the "front plate" structures are of copper. so heat must conduct fast, they should have to have 21 degree or more. It is not happening. 

 

But there always the "meshing issue" is getting found, on every run. "refinement" is the only option I am trying out.

 

Could you pls tel me in the report" decision center" should note down highest and lowest temperatures? It has not done.

 

 

 

Pls put your thoughts and could you pls give an idea to tune the tool further., to get near about 50-60 C  as the highest temperature in my structure? with same 7oWatts applied in 3 volumetric structures inside.( i mean with present condition of BCs)

Hi,

 

One issue is that after only 100 iterations, your results will not be converged. Run for closer to 500-1000 🙂

You have a film coefficient set to 0C on 4 walls, is that correct? Please just remove these conditions for now. You are telling CFD that you have 12C at the inlet and 0C on the walls of the air - surely that is incorrect? What are you expecting of CFD at the edges where these two conditions meet? It has currently got both 12C and 0C assigned 😉

 

Take a look at your energy balance and mass balance - not yet good enough. There are some crazy numbers there, which makes me question things still. Run it until properly converged first and then look again.

But, I have few questions here. PLs, find the attached report.

 

1. how to get the best results, with less than 1500  iterations?

at 500 iterations,  the results were a 2-3 degree less. The run time is almost 9 hours it took(1500 iterations), with LOCAL options(processor). 

Because, I need to do repeated runs for the 60-80 different dimensions in the Copper rod/silicon body in my structure.

 

2. If we see the "front plate" they all made up of Copper( material), but the temperature obtained in them is very less? (yellow cored highlighted in report) Is it because of Mesh issue?  in my case how can we solve this issue? 

 

 

3. You have guided me before to remove "temp as "0" here right? If I add the "Film coefficient" the 0, Celsius is unavoidable. It is converged when it is converged, often a better mesh can mean that you need less iterations but it really depends. Sometimes a finer mesh needs more iterations...

If the change is minimal, then just stop early 🙂

Maybe you could utilise the cloud, or what about running in 2D? These are super fast 😉

The 0C is not unavoidable, see below, this is a 25C reference.

You are correct though, I did suggest to simply remove it for now to avoid complications.

Hi,

 

You do not need anything in addition to run a 2D analysis, simply create a slice of the model in CAD - with surfaces instead of solids - should be pretty simple 🙂

 

2 - Not sure, could be mesh. Once you have the set up as you want ti, feel free to share a CFZ file and I can run a little test here 🙂

For the 2D simulation, do I need to redraw my whole structure in 2D slices?

Is there a way I can convert this 3D to 2D without redrawing?
