How can I leave a BIM360 project?

A few months ago a client added me to their project to help troubleshoot an issue in one of their models. They forgot to remove me after, and today I was testing a new feature in Revit 2019.2 and uploaded my test model into theirs before I notice it. I already deleted the model but I would like to remove myself from that project and site altogether. How do I do that? is my only option to email the admin? Please add this option if it's not available.

Thank You!

Hi @Basam.Yousif

Thank you for reaching out about this.  Today, you must be removed from the project by a Project Admin - there is no way to remove yourself.  We will consider this request for the roadmap...I suspect it will need some sort of workflow where you request to be removed and the admin can approve it (admins generally don't want users to leave without knowing about it and approving it, in order to maintain control over "who can do what" on the project).

Best Regards,

Joan Allen

Thank you, Joan!

If I may add this suggestion (or wish) to the roadmap, to make it optional for the Admin whether users can request to be removed, or they can leave on their own and all the admin gets is a notification that they did. I bet The latter would be more popular - and certainly my choice on all the projects I admin.

Thanks again 🙂

Several months back, I was inadvertently added to a project and not sure by who. Now there is no way of knowing who added me and I have zero ability to remove myself from it. Your process gives complete control to an Admin and zero control to the person added.

This is also a problem for me.  Since it was "easier" to add me (and many others) to every project in BIM that is what happened.  Now I have to always fish around the list of 60 projects I am part of to find the 5 that I am active in.  The other 55 mean nothing to me.  I would really like to drop myself from these projects that mean nothing to me.  Knowing that the person who set this up did it this way on purpose, they aren't going to drop me if I ask.  Additionally, along with 13 others, I have been set up as an Admin as well so while I can remove others, I can't remove myself.  At least I don't think I can.  I'm not an expert in BIM.

I feel the new Autodesk Construction Cloud UI has exacerbated this issue with all projects from all accounts now showing in a combined Projects list.

While this is great from the perspective that you can more easily access projects without first changing accounts, it does mean that you see a lot more projects in which you may not be active.

I feel having a project Pin feature to put these pinned projects at the top of the list may go some ways to addressing this.

Can this please be fixed or answered, my BIM360 experience is getting really slow because of this.

Agree with danielgijsbers...  This does seem to slow things down some.  I am part of 61 projects and am only involved in 6.  Please help here.

I have this issue having multiple projects to deal with (some very old and the admin won't respond to my requests to be removed).

Another issue is that browsing the BIM 360 projects window to open something, your projects are never in the same order, which makes it hard to locate what you need in a hurry.

I had noted before I was part of 61 projects while involved in 6, I'm not up to 101 projects while still only being involved in 6.  I just can't stop the wave.

For steveperkio, the only way I have been able to help find things in a hurry is to add a "Project Image" to the Project.  That way I can see the image while scrolling through the 100 projects I am part of.  Of course you have to be an Admin for that project to do it, but going opening the Project Admin page for the project and going to Profile you can change the Project Image.

@joan_allen Three years on now, and nothing?

If this thread didn't have enough justification for such a feature, let me add a more serious one to the list.

Towards the end of last year I left former employment and updated my account email. To this day, I still have access to confidential projects which I should not have. I have been in discussion with the Fusion 360 team regarding some related account issues, which I mentioned this to them, and they will be reaching out to the BIM 360 team to discuss.

You can read more in my post regarding Account Personal Information & Platform Project Security.

Does anyone feel like inviting a bunch of the Autodesk employees to all kind of customer projects. See how they enjoy shifting through these projects they don't work upon? Maybe that will improve the odds of this requirement?

I don't wish to pile on too much in this thread, but circling back to the concept that an Admin has to approve someone's exit from the project/account.

I might be able to accept this if you are still working for the company that is also working on the project. As in my case where I am no longer with that company, then I should 100% have that option and control to remove my profile from the project/account.

I'm sure @daniel.nc.gijsbers was likely only joking in their previous reply, but let's use that thought as an entry into an analogy, like a cloud services email newsletter/subscription.

BIM 360 has an email notification system, which at most will email you a daily update for items you are assigned to, and becomes more frequent when the item's assignee is the company name to which you are/were attached to. But unlike a traditional email newsletter, BIM 360 has no way for you to completely unsubscribe, or to turn it off in your project profile Notifications settings.

So even when you no longer have any connection to the company that is working on the project, you may continue to receive email notifications in your personal profile that was formally used for work. The closest equivalent of this is email spam with currently no way to unsubscribe.

I'm no GDPR expert, but I do believe the ability to unsubscribe yourself from emailed material is a requirement.

So I feel this topic goes beyond a nice-to-have feature, and steps into the legal depths of personal data and privacy compliance, especially in certain regions around the world. That should make this a fairly high priority to resolve.

Indeed I was joking on adding ADSK people to projects but the feeling of this needed to be resolved is there none the less. Interesting point you make about the email notification system I hadn't thought of that.

I'll pile on...

It's unfathomable to me that an individual can't remove themselves from a group they are a part of.  As an admin for similar systems like this it's easy to believe that just going through the approvals to add a person to a group is significant enough, but having one person own the removal of people as well can make a for a full-time job.  Like stopping newsletters from a website, I should be able to control my own account and once approved for access, I should have control to remove myself.

Chad's point is an excellent one.  Particularly in the business environment today we all know that people are moving from company to company at an unprecedented rate.  Internal movement within a company surely must be at or near a high as well.  Again, all the more reason for a person to control their removal from a group.

Joan Allen...  Your statement of, "...admins generally don't want users to leave without knowing about it and approving it, in order to maintain control over "who can do what" on the project".  Where is the data on this?  I've been an admin on a similar system for years, overseeing hundreds of access requests a year with many hundreds of people in multiple group sites.  I would welcome anyone wanting to remove themselves from a site having that capability as it removes overhead for me.  Does Autodesk want to make my life easier?  If someone removes themselves, allow the admin to have notifications of that change sent to them so they know when a person drop from their group.  But also, let the admin choose if they get those notifications or not.  Maybe even better, in the configuration of a group, allow the Admin to be the one to control who can leave a group.  Either the admin allows all individuals to remove themselves from a group or not.  It would be my belief that 90%+ of the Admins will allow people to remove themselves from a group.

And it's not always a member with design experience that manages the project, or account. In many cases it's a general IT Sys Admin who wouldn't know whether someone should remain on the project/account.

Regardless, if a staff member were to remove themselves against their manager's/company's wishes, then let that manager performance manage their staff. This is not a responsibility of the software.

Yep, standard autodesk failing their customers.  This request has been open since 2020 and two years later that and the force MFA isn't available.  Do you guys care at all?

Jesus i just searched for a way to remove myself from a project as Revit keeps defaulting to it and i have to keep switching accounts so its becoming a pain, figuring there must be a simply way not obvious to me it comes as a complete surprise that this feature is not even implemented, not only is it illegal and against the rules of the EU GDPR law's ITS INCREDIBLY BLOODY FRUSTRATING, sort it out Autodesk and whilst you gentlemen may be cut from more professional cloth i for one welcome anyone to email me the email addresses of the BIM360 Autodesk team so i can add them to all my projects, maybe once they have to sort through all the crap we have to on a daily basis they may move the feature up the priority list!

With the ability to do so limited to admins, and it could never change, you should focus your efforts on the project admins. A single email "should" get the job done. If not, multiple emails will get someone's attention. Make it cost them time until it gets done. At least, in that way, you are not waiting for something from Autodesk that might not happen.
