Extremely slow loading linked models

We are working on a very large project.  We strategically split apart our models to help with model performance.  Everything was working well until last friday.  Now upon opening the model we have extremely slow performance when it is loading the linked models.  It is also extremely slow to synch.

This is happening across all models and for users at many different companies.  

I found the help doc that suggests disabling add-ons, I tried that and that didn't do anything.  

I tried clearing out the collaboration cache and paccache folders.  I've tried opening different models with all worksets closed, then auditing and compacting.

Any other suggestions of things to try?  We can't afford to lose another day's worth of work.

I would check the links to make sure there aren't any orphaned links in them. Also, some file maintenance might be in order. Audit and compact for starters.

Space management seemed to help improve the link load times upon opening.  I went into each MEPTFP model and deleted redundant spaces, not placed spaces and also any spaces that didn't have a corresponding room.  That significantly increased the open times for models.
