Generative Coordination for services // Model Coordination

I think most people will have heard of generative design by now; the algorithmic and iterative design process whereby many design options can be generated to help find optimal solutions.

I would like to see a similar approach applied to services coordination. Maybe call it Generative Coordination. Given that coordination is hierarchical and rules-based, a generative approach seems fitting.

 

I realise this is a non-trivial idea, but here are some points around how I envisage this working.

  • This process is a separate task to clash detection, and therefore needs its own space where the results can be viewed without affecting the work in progress Revit models.
  • You define the rules:
    • Which disciplines
    • Discipline priority
    • Possibly applying it to certain zones/levels in the building, or systems
    • Set minimum sizes of elements for consideration
    • By how much can elements be moved, to avoid extreme movement changes
    • Respect any clearance zones for movement and equipment access
  • The results can be reviewed, and then tabled for discussion in a coordination meeting.
  • Any elements that can't be repositioned very well will be surfaced as a clash result.
  • And for all agreed outcomes, push these into the Revit models where the elements are automatically moved into their new positions.
  • Restart the next generative coordination cycle.

Very interested in the bigger idea to solve trade model coordination problems by applying the brute force power of machine learning and computational design to the workflow. I'm much less interested in slight improvements to the current process in Navisworks as it's the same thing job after job after job. As a General Contractor, we receive design models and use those to host trade subs' models (that are significantly different than the design intent schematic models). Each of the trade subs is modeling in a silo as their "best guess". Until our VDC Specialist assemble all of the models and perform clash detection, each trade sub has no idea what the other one is doing. There's a massive amount of work to find all the clashes, then rework everything to try and fix it over many iterations. What if the HVAC equipment had more universal standards (like European elevators) so more of the engineer's models could be re-used? What if Revit had much stronger fabrication intelligence so (presumably) the data required would be part of the exports and available to the Super Navisworks AI/ML tools to take all of the models and solve for:

1) Optimal Routing using the least materials

2) Sequencing logistics

3) Making sure everything fits within the space available

4) Clearances for valves, filters, installation, mounting, etc.

5) Penetrations through fire-rated assemblies

 

Autodesk has the power to do this. I'm not sure they have the will to see it through. Revit development is winding down and Forma is winding up as its eventual replacement. It's not there yet, or any time soon. Some other developer is going to figure this out and bring a lot of customers with them!
