Autodesk Desktop Connector - Needs vast improvements -> take inspiration from Vault.

Hello,

I believe that Autodesk Desktop Connector, tool that connects your cloud data with local space needs vast improvements. The way that it is structured now makes a lot of problems in correct workflow online-offline. And all major cloud worksharing apps (google drive, dropbox, onedrive, box,...) are vastly better to work with data and properly syncing them.

Autodesk Desktop app doesn't store the data but compares data that are cached (different local path) and cloud. So if you work on Plant cloud project on Revit cloud file, etc... and if on the SAME pc you want to use the "local" version. You have to publish it on cloud, Sync it (download) to desktop connector and than you can use it. Because of the different paths.

For some apps (Plant) there are even different files at Desktop connector and cache (DCF files, ...). So its is not 1:1 copy.

Take inspiration from your own Autodesk PDM - Autodesk Vault.

  • This syncing between server (cloud) and local is great.
  • Using check-in and check-out you have al the power to say which version you want locally and which is for others on server(cloud).
  • If the connection to server(cloud) is lost, you can continue your work with the same files (without locating some other "cache").
  • You (user) have the power, you have the tools, the files and all that is needed to proper file sharing.
  • And because it is not "application" inside "application"... you can put the folder into "quick access" in windows. This is great for... quick acces while you work on project. (The same work with Dropbox/OneDrive/Google Drive/...)
  • etc...

I am sorry but even simple "Synology app" for syncing files is better at this workflow than Autodesk Desktop connector. Which is aimed at CAD files. True. But have a lot of things to learn. If you agree, please vote for this idea.Thx

Yes to all of the above AND...it runs elevated on the system, meaning it is constantly dragging on machine performance. There is no reason why this application needs to use as much system resources as it does. Despite the occasional inconvenience of manually starting, I have otherwise disabled it on my system and have noticed faster boot times and overall machine performance.
