I recently purchased ADT and got talked into a subscription because of the
impending release of ADT 4 and the hint of some mysterious "extra"
(evidently Arch Studio) being included above and beyond the extensions.
Since I support a few small firms using ADT, I figured it would be a good
idea to be ahead of the curve. Otherwise I would never have signed on for a
subscription. And now that the price is going up I will probably be looking
into AD alternatives. I don't really want to, nor do I have the time to
"trial and error" and bunch of demos, nor can I afford to buy a bunch of cad
packages just to check them out. But something's got to break and I don't
want it to be me or my business...
I recently had a discussion with one of my clients about the price of doing
business. One of the points he made was how he felt like he never just
"paid a fee for service" anymore (It came up because I do charge a flat fee
for my services, in case anyone was wondering...). Vendors charging rates
based on the value of their service to your business rather than the cost of
providing that service. For example, he had to get his color printer
repaired and it was $300 for the first half hour and $55 every half hour
after that. Pretty insane pricing until you consider that many businesses
may rely on that type of printer and are losing money when it's out of
service. He punted and bought a new color laser printer. Maybe I way off
base, but I just get the feeling that AD is doing the same thing with their
"service". How critical is AutoCAD or ADT, etc. to your business?
For a large firm, the costs associated with alternative software,
purchasing, configuring, training, downtime, etc., may not outweigh the
costs associated with upgrading existing software. But for the smaller
firm, say 1-10 cad users, I don't know...
