Subscription

Is this an appropriate forum to discuss subscription issues? I just received notice that
my ADT subscriptions will be nearly doubling in price, but may now include Arch. Studio,
or maybe it's just a free sample of studio; the message is unclear. ABM & ABE are being
combined into ABS, but I don't know how my current seats will convert. Do you get one ABS
for each ABx or do you need both to qualify for the combined product? As usual, there's a
dearth of information on the subscription Point-A site. I'm in the position of trying to
justify additional expenses to my management and Autodesk isn't giving me much in the way
of ammunition.

I see I am not the only one that thought that was a bit cryptic. That price
increase is really making me wonder. I was on the fence before deciding if
the price was worth what we are getting for subscription.

I will have to check into that Studio thing but in one way it kind of
irritates me. I realize it has not been a good seller but tacking it on ADT
subscription automatically seems wrong especially for those who bought
Studio and have ADT subscriptions where they may or may not get it for free
(OK not free at all), like me.

If anyone has a AutoDesk crystal ball they could loan me for a while I would
appreciate it.

The subscription will not be doubling. For ADT it was $395 last year and the
new cost is $440. The pricing can be found at AutoDesk.com. The entire
pricing scheme for all products are listed there.

I recently purchased ADT and got talked into a subscription because of the
impending release of ADT 4 and the hint of some mysterious "extra"
(evidently Arch Studio) being included above and beyond the extensions.
Since I support a few small firms using ADT, I figured it would be a good
idea to be ahead of the curve. Otherwise I would never have signed on for a
subscription. And now that the price is going up I will probably be looking
into AD alternatives. I don't really want to, nor do I have the time to
"trial and error" and bunch of demos, nor can I afford to buy a bunch of cad
packages just to check them out. But something's got to break and I don't
want it to be me or my business...

I recently had a discussion with one of my clients about the price of doing
business. One of the points he made was how he felt like he never just
"paid a fee for service" anymore (It came up because I do charge a flat fee
for my services, in case anyone was wondering...). Vendors charging rates
based on the value of their service to your business rather than the cost of
providing that service. For example, he had to get his color printer
repaired and it was $300 for the first half hour and $55 every half hour
after that. Pretty insane pricing until you consider that many businesses
may rely on that type of printer and are losing money when it's out of
service. He punted and bought a new color laser printer. Maybe I way off
base, but I just get the feeling that AD is doing the same thing with their
"service". How critical is AutoCAD or ADT, etc. to your business?

For a large firm, the costs associated with alternative software,
purchasing, configuring, training, downtime, etc., may not outweigh the
costs associated with upgrading existing software. But for the smaller
firm, say 1-10 cad users, I don't know...

The letter I have says "Autodesk Architectrual desktop subscription
suggested retail price(SRP) will increase to $695 for all new subscription
sales."

That's the ADT price in the letter I received as well. I emailed subscription-team@ and
they cleared up my question about how my building services seats will convert, but it's
still a big hit in the pocketbook. Currently Mechanical and Electrical are separate
packages. Under the new scheme, with them rolled into one, I have to pay the higher price
for the combined product even if the user only needs one discipline. Since ADT will be
included in the combined building systems product, the ADT licenses that I'm currently
using with the old separate mech/elec will become surplus. I think I can find a use for
them if upper management is willing to pay for the upkeep, but that's a pretty big "if"
when combined with the other increases.
