Rant about retiring of AutoCAD 2000

In regards to the retiring of AutoCAD 2000. I can't understand why Autodesk
won't announce what they will be retiring. I am hearing conflicting reports
from different resellers. I can't understand why Autodesk would tell the
resellers (who are telling the customers) then deny knowledge of it to
customers. I can't understand why I am now scrambling to re-do software
budgets on this bit of information that I can't get the maker of the
software to admit to even though the people that are selling their software
will admit to it.

15 is basically the version of the drawing database. The database remained
the same from R2000-R2002. The software changed.

I'm subscription neutral, so please don't think I'm picking on you, but why
is it that folks think that they can only budget if they justify it with a
subscription? We've been on subscription for several years. Personally, I
prefer it. But this year we stopped because we were tired of spending
precious cash a year or more in advance...essentially loaning Autodesk our
money interest free. It just stopped making sense to our bean counters and
so they said no more. They said basically, we're still committed to
Autodesk and will continue to upgrade, but at the time of sale/delivery.

You've probably heard of "just in time" product delivery strategies whereby
companies don't warehouse as much product but rather streamline their
delivery methods, cutting costs as a result. It's a similar strategy.

Sign up for a few reputable webisite eZines like upfrontezine.com and cadalyst magazine, and most of these things won't come as a total surprise for you next time.

I believe Autodesk does make announcements for killing off older versions, as part of their advertising campaigns the last 30-60 days before it happens. All you have to do is pay attention to the advertising and mail and Email notices you get from your reseller and Autodesk's online estore.

This retirement only includes 2000 and 2000 based vertical products and not
2000i or 2002 and their based verticals.

The retirement date for AutoCAD 2000 and AutoCAD 2000-based products is
January 15, 2004. After January 15, 2004, AutoCAD 2000 and AutoCAD
2000-based customers will not be able to upgrade or crossgrade to a current
release. Product "Retirement" is defined as products no longer supported by
Autodesk.

Autodesk will expand the existing Legacy Program to include AutoCAD 2000 and
AutoCAD 2000-based products on January 15, 2004. The Legacy Program will
allow any user of a retired product to purchase a full seat of the latest
version of any select Autodesk® software at a 30% discount (Subscription
purchase is required with the Legacy Program, where available.)

There are currently no retirement dates for AutoCAD 2000i (or any
2000i-based product.)

Thanks,
Eric

As far as I understand... AutoCAD LT 2000 is part of the AutoCAD 2000 family
of products.

Lee is correct, LT 2000 is included in the product line retirement.

Thanks,

Eric

thanks guys. gee, management is just gonna be thrilled to hear this. let's
see, upgrade all the seats of LT we have, or upgrade the one seat of
inventor that i'm using. since they didn't have any intention of upgrading
anything i'm not sure what they will do 😞

Look on the bright side, you have ~7 months to do it in.

so, anyone got a killer letter they have written to upper management that
convinced them to upgrade that they would care to share so i don't have to
bang my head against the keyboard to find the right combination of words?
hey, why should i do the work if someone else has already done it?

use the facts. do the homework. talk to your salesman. present options with
pricetags. consider upgrading to 2002 to save money. give them the picture,
its their decision. the last time i did it, i threw in the ROI disclaimer so
they wouldnt ask me to do it. no way any cad upgrade is going to pay for
itself in saved time, as discussed here previously, unless it helps you
increase sales or lay somebody off, which is not going to happen. the
alternative is to fall behind the industry, be aggravated by conversions,
and look backwards to customers and employees.
