Producing large scale infrastructure design with BIM methods is slowly becoming the norm. Most disciplines can be managed throughout BIM, but it’s not yet the case for Planting.
On a “Full BIM” rail project, the client challenged us to integrate Planting design in the workflow including BIM, GIS, and databases. On the other side, our landscape team was only used to 2D AutoCAD and Excel.
We created a Civil 3D plugin based on planting databases, allowing them to keep their 2D environment. Thanks to the “Extended Data” functionality, we attached data to their design. Then, we could exploit it by combining geometry and datasets to create GIS models. By projecting it on finished surfaces and adding a populating function, we made BIM models in C3D. From there, we could exploit it in Navisworks, create IFCs, and go beyond with realistic rendering in TwinMotion.
