Why does ADT3 do this?!

Acad crashes so it asks me if I'd like to save changes. Naturally I say yes.
Then when I try and open the file it asks me if I'd like to recover it. Yes
I say. It then tells me it cannot recover. WHY? This way I have lost a good
recent copy of the drawing.

Step back a minute and think about it....

AutoCAD crashes and gives you a message that you can save your work UP TO
THAT POINT. Hmmmm... something happened AT THAT POINT, or prior, that caused
AutoCAD to crash. And that something could be something that hosed your
drawing's database, causing the crash. And when you answer YES, you're
saving that something that hosed your drawing's database, in that drawing's
database.

Bye bye drawing database. And maybe RECOVER will work, probably not.
(Murphy, y'know...).

My recommendation (this is MINE, not official Autodesk): Never, EVER, answer
yes, to that dialog. ALWAYS save every time you do something that you do not
want to have to do again, or every 15-30 minutes. Set your AUTOSAVE value to
a number that represents the amount of work that you can afford to lose on a
given day - again, I would estimate 15-30 minutes.

Update...

I just received an email from "a little birdy" who informed me that AutoCAD
2002 / ADT 3.3 now saves a BAK file when you answer "Yes" to that question.
So you will have a second option - rename the bak and see what you have...

No need to rename the file either as it is named "DrawingName_recover.dwg".

At the New Zealand launch ADT 3.3 crashed midway through dividing a space, the demonstrator answered yes to save, restarted and it had not saved anything. Felt a mixture of pleasure (hooray at least it happens to them too) and pity (we have all been there.

He redid that section of the demo again & it worked fine...
Getting 3.3 next week so will have a play.
