kernel32 error

Got a call from a client who just installed ADT3.3 and gets a kernel32
error every time he tries to open a dwg...any ideas? Machine is
Win98(probably part of problem), 128Mg RAM, 1Gig swapfile, plenty of
room on hard drive, clean install, no other Autodesk software installed,
nothing running in background...

Thanks,

Hey Bob,
From Autodesk's knowledgebase, did you have them try the following:

Issue

The following error message is displayed while you are using AutoCAD®
software:

Unhandled Access Violation Exception 0XFFFFFFFF @ 6BFDIEA

Solution

Some versions of the AccessRamp Monitor software that ships with
versions of the MindSpring Desktop and the EarthLink equivalent can cause
conflicts with AutoCAD software.

To disable the AccessRamp Monitor:

1.. From the Start menu (Windows), choose Find > Files or Folders.
2.. Search the local hard drives for a file named armcfg32.exe.
3.. Double-click the armcfg32.exe file.
4.. Clear the Enable Dialup Monitor check box and choose OK.
5.. Restart the computer.
Note: The AccessRamp Monitor software will be displayed in memory as
armon32.exe in the Close Program dialog box in Windows® 95, Windows 98 and
Windows Me and on the Processes tab in the Task Manager in Windows NT® and
2000.

Other dial-up Internet service provider services also use the
armon32.exe file.

Note: Some installations of the armon32.exe file have caused KERNEL32
errors instead of Unhandled Access Violation Exceptions. Unloading the
Dialup Monitor has resolved these problems, too.

Verizon customers:

If the armon.exe file or the armon32.exe file is running on the
system, by default, the file is located in the C:\Program
Files\VerizonDSL\IPinsight\ folder.

Rename the file and restart the computer to prevent the fatal error
from occurring.

For example, rename the armon32.exe file to armon2exe.bak.

Of course, I'm sure you already looked this up yourself, right 😉

The Kernel32.dll file, one of three core components in Windows 98, provides
base system functionality, including input/output services, virtual memory
management, and task scheduling. This file also handles errors that occur
when an application is running. A Kernel32.dll error means that Windows
could not process a command, and could not find a more specific error
message to name the exact cause of the problem.
Although a Kernel32.dll error may occur only when working in ADT 3, it does
not necessarily mean that ADT3 is the cause. Many different factors can
cause the error, including low-level DOS problems, memory conflicts between
device drivers, software, hardware, and corrupt elements in specific files.
ADT3 may be the only application that is memory- or processor-intensive
enough to cause another, more fundamental problem to manifest. In some cases
it may be necessary to contact third-party software or hardware vendors for
resolution. Possible solutions to Kernel32.dll errors include updating
drivers or other software, or restoring parts of the Windows operating
system to a more standard configuration.

Solution:

Make sure ADT is running the latest service pack.

Disable Hardware acceleration for the display adapter.
1. Right-click My Computer and then choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Performance tab, and then
click the Graphics.
3. Drag the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then click OK.

Make sure there are no hardware conflicts and all devices are running the
latest and greatest drivers.
