Something like this could be useful for use in dense 3D piping models. It's often difficult to regain your bearings after realtime 3D model rotation and zooming, especially in piping systems where there are similar piping configurations - "Which line number am I looking at?"
How could this be implemented? Would it add a considerable processing load to the model?
