Add Detail View Support and Automatic Insertion of User-Defined Detail Drawings in AutoCAD Plant 3D Isometrics

Add Detail View Support and Automatic Insertion of User-Defined Detail Drawings in AutoCAD Plant 3D Isometrics

Current Limitation

AutoCAD Plant 3D's isometric generation functionality does not currently provide a native method to include enlarged detail views or user-created detail drawings within generated pipe isometric drawings.

In many projects, standard isometric scales are insufficient to clearly represent complex piping arrangements such as:

  • Closely spaced fittings
  • Valve and instrument assemblies
  • Small-bore branch connections
  • Pipe support details
  • Fabrication-specific configurations
  • Congested areas with overlapping dimensions and annotations

As a result, designers must manually create supplementary detail drawings and add them after isometric generation. This work must often be repeated whenever the isometric is regenerated, creating additional effort and increasing the risk of inconsistencies.

Proposed Enhancement

Introduce a detailed-view workflow within Isometric Drawing Production that supports both:

Option 1: Model-Based Detail Views

Allow users to define a region of the piping model and automatically generate an enlarged detail view within the isometric drawing.

Features could include:

  • Detail callouts (Detail A, Detail B, etc.)
  • User-selectable scales
  • Automatic dimension and annotation updates
  • Automatic regeneration when the model changes
  • Configurable placement and appearance through Iso Style settings
Option 2: User-Defined Detail Drawings

Allow users to create separate detail drawings (DWG files) and associate them with specific pipelines, line numbers, or isometric drawings.

During isometric generation, Plant 3D would:

  • Detect associated detail drawings
  • Scale the detail appropriately
  • Automatically place the detail in available whitespace within the drawing border
  • Generate a matching detail callout reference
  • Preserve the association during future regenerations

This approach would give users complete control over highly specialized fabrication, installation, or construction details while keeping all relevant information within the generated isometric package.

Suggested Configuration Options
  • Enable/disable detail insertion
  • Automatic or manual placement
  • Detail scale selection
  • Multiple details per isometric
  • Detail library management
  • Sheet selection rules for multi-sheet isometrics
  • User-defined detail templates
  • Automatic whitespace detection for placement

Benefits
  • Improves readability of complex piping arrangements
  • Reduces manual drafting after isometric generation
  • Preserves details during regeneration
  • Reduces fabrication and construction errors
  • Improves communication between design, fabrication, and site teams
  • Makes better use of unused drawing space
  • Supports project-specific detailing standards
  • Enhances productivity for EPC contractors, fabricators, and owner-operators

Business Impact

This enhancement would significantly improve the quality and usability of Plant 3D isometric drawings by allowing critical fabrication and installation details to remain within the generated isometric package. The ability to automatically insert either model-generated detail views or user-created detail drawings would reduce post-processing effort, improve drawing consistency, and streamline workflows across engineering, fabrication, and construction teams.
