Report Creator ( 2019 )

Overall, The BOM looks fairly good for what I need it for.  I have it print to excel for editing, it's easier than PDF.

The issues that pop up that I am unsure on how to fix.

  • Quantity of pipe is in inches - foot inch would be a better format ( and meter millimeter for metric )
  • The extra lines between each line item is really annoying, not sure how to remove that.  If I shrink the distance in the report designer it starts to cut off the text in the report, an making it larger makes each line item further apart.
  • The blank Type: - is structural members, and so is the count.  In this particular BOM it's ledger angles.  I am trying to use the structure tab instead of making each ledger angle a separate piece of equipment - which is time consuming.  When I try to add in another line item for the structural component it doubles the spaces between each line item for the entire BOM.

This isn't the full list in the BOM - I deleted a bunch of lines to make it shorter and easier to display.

Any help would be appreciated,  It has been a long time since I tried editing with the report creator and I'm getting a little frustrated and figured asking for help would be the best bet.

Hey, if I'm doing something stupid or silly - just let me know.  I'm more than happy to have this made better.

You can manipulate the output via the 'Scripts' module or use an expression in a custom Field. My preference is the latter. For quantities, I use the following to get appropriately formatted pipe length (decimal feet), bolt set, and other item quantities:

qty exp.PNG

The extra lines between each line item is really annoying, not sure how to remove that.

There is probably a way to fix this in ReportCreator but I just run a cleanup VB script in Excel to eliminate empty rows. I can share it if you want to PM me.

The blank Type

I'm not clear on what exactly the problem is here. I'd guess this can be solved with another custom Field expression but hard to say without more detail.

I've got the rcf-file Thank you.

  1. Meter instead of mm or Feet instead of inches: This is a tricky one because we are talking about the quantity field. Sometimes quantity is something with a unit like mm but sometimes quantity is just the count of components of a specific class. So diving this value by 100 for example to get the meter doesn't work here because the then the count of valves for example is instead of 2 now 0,002 which is wrong. In this case you create the model in Plant already in meter (or feet) by using a specific template which is already in m (or feet).
  2. I'm not sure what line do you mean. I have attached a snapshot how it looks like on my site with your RCF-file
  3. The structural members are not listed with their description because a different field property is used. For all other components it is EngineeringItems_PartSizeLongDescription but for the structure members it is SteelStructure_PartSizeLongDescription. So you have insert this field into your report and to overlap it with the other field. See attachments solution and result.

I hope I could help you.

Thank you!

I'm not worried about the lengths.

For the extra spaces that shows up in excel not PDF's

It looks like it is a specific issue with excel.  The equipment list ends up having the description cell extremely small.  You can only see the 'A' then the member shows up properly.  But that fairly easy to edit and fix.

We stopped using PDF reports so the equipment suppliers can edit the equipment list if needed.  But all in all... It shows up and I can get it working better.

For the extra rows, I found that selecting the Raw Data mode removes all extra rows.
