Link P&ID Equipment Tags to Plant 3D Model

All,

I've created a P&ID drawing (in Plant 3D) and have several tanks tagged.  Now I want to place the equipment models in 3D and want to link the P&ID tags to these new models, but am stumped as to how to proceed.  (I'm also having the same problems with the pipe lines themselves, but I'll save that for another post).  I would love to look at some demo videos or would welcome any advice, but I've been striking out so far.  The closest I've come is this older post, but the links don't seem to work anymore.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed night!

Peace,

Pete

If the TAG configuration between component TAG P&ID and 3D component TAG identical?
the same applies for pipeline group TAG between P&ID and 3D.

Hartmut,

I guess that's my question.  How do I make them the same tag?  I have the P&ID and the 3D model and I want to tie items together so that if one changes the other changes too, or at least I can validate the drawings to see if they're in sync with each other.  I'm trying to do TK-003 and I'll try to attach the drawings.  Please let me know how I can tag them to be the same or set me straight on how this can be accomplished.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Peace,

Pete

Is your tank drawn as a piece of equipment or has it been converted to a piece of equipment using PLANTEQUIPMENTCONVERT? When you convert it you should be asked to assign a tag to it. By assigning it the same tag as your P&ID object this will link them. Be sure to pick the correct object class as well.

How long have you worked with Plant P&ID and 3D 2016?
Did you have a training on this program?

I've been working on and off for about a year in the program.  I have taken the certification training from Autodesk, but they don't really get into topics like this.  I can model stuff okay, but there doesn't seem to be a clear way to link these items together in the native program.  I'll try to shoot out a video later on, so you can see what I'm trying to do.  Thanks for your patience and have a most blessed day!

All,

I'm attaching a screen cast to illustrate what I would like to accomplish.  Please let me know if this makes sense or if I am way off base.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

The 3D object you created is not mapped to the right object class. That is why you can't see the TK-003 on your list

Firstly, why are you using AutoCAD commands to draw a tank? Inside the P3D ribbon is a dialog box to build equipment.

Ed, is this something that needs to be done inside of the Project Properties?  I thought I set it to be a tank, so I must be missing something here.  Can you please clarify for me?  Thanks for the response and have a most blessed night!

Tomislav,

I only modeled the object because someone had mentioned that if I converted the equipment, I could link that up to the P&ID.  I agree with you and do like the equipment templates and had tried that first.  I can use that tool, but I'm trying to figure out how to tie the P&ID equipment to Plant 3D equipment.

To answer your question, unless something has changed, there isn't a way to link the P&ID Equipment Tag, to a 3D model tag. Its just pipelines and inline items (valves etc)

You can do a compare of the P&ID model and the 3D model and it'll tell you what you've missed, thats under the Project Validation settings.

There is no link for equipment, only line numbers and items placed on the line.

Ed,

Good morning!  I was doing some more research and I came upon this article.  While I'm planning on testing it some more this morning, I was wondering if this is what you meant by mapping the object class.

Hope all is well, I appreciate everyone's help and have a most blessed day!

Yes that is a good place to start. I'm not sure how the PLANTEQUIPMENTCONVERT mapping is set up and I'm no where near my computer but once I get to it I'll check it out. But like the guys said above its not really a link it's just a way for the model and P&ID to talk to each other during validation. Changing something in the P&ID will not change it in the model and vice versa.

After doing some extensive research, it looks as though the property linking is only used for the piping and in-line assets (which was mentioned above).  I find it a little odd that there is an option to map the information from the P&ID Equipment to the 3D Equipment, but there doesn't seem to be a way to engage that functionality to actually draw the P&ID information into the model.

If anybody has any other steps or information that I have missed, I would be truly grateful!  This just seems like a missed opportunity to tie information between the two...

Thanks for all the help!  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Peace,

Pete

Are there any updates to this? I am interested in seeing where this goes.

nowhere, everything is in place. I don’t think that in the next 5 years this will change

Dear Plant 3D User,

we know that Autodesk never intended to connect the two programs P&ID and Plant 3D directly.
As a result, some programmers have set out to get rid of these problems.
I know 2 of them:
the first is:

https://www.auxalia.com/en/produkte/planttools/

and the second is:

https://www.axavia.com/en/produkte/edb/

So now have fun browsing through information 😉

Thank you. I have been looking at Auxalia. The other one is new to me. I will dig into this.
