Dear @Anonymous,

Parametric pipe support via SpecEditor (F1) Help
Custom pipe support via scripting
Block-based pipe support with the command "plantpipesupportconvert"

Plantpipesupportconvert  gives different results to creating a block based support from the add pipe support dialogue box.

If I make a support using a block and the add pipe support dialogue box, the support attaches fine to the pipe using the move grip which allows for input distance from end/bend in pipe, but not to set distance from adjacent support.

Also there is no rotate grip and no point on the support that a snap can grab (eg for a Distance Inquiry or to draw construction geometry)

Kind of works but not satisfactory at all

If I use the plantpipesupportconvert, then when i select the block, I'm asked to specify insertion point on the pipe or piping component .... sounds logical .... however the cursor changes to a pick box (if i try a snap it is ignored even if i chose 'from' ... 'end' (of construction line at insert point on pipe) 'perpendicular' (pick the pipe isoline) [this should chose the point at the center of the pipe] , if i chose a random point on the pipe [the only section method that actually works], then the grips are at some strange even more random location not even on the pipe

NOT SATISFACTORY AT ALL

Is there a method for working with custom pipe supports that is viable?

Looks like this issue has not been resolved, the PDO team method (using .xy filter) does NOT work either
Is this ever going to be addressed?

Further to this, when using the block based support method, if you change the elevation of the pipes, the supports do not move with the pipe and need to be relocated.

Dear @Anonymous,

For me, the block-based support via PLANTPARTCONVERT all work very well.
I would not change that.

This is an opinion I can not represent.

@h_eger

Thanks for responding,

Maybe I'm missing something in the procedure.

Any chance you could make a quick video showing how you would go about creating the supports as shown below and then how you can change the elevation without the supports dropping off and needing to be individually reattached (that is using the pipe elevation change as opposed to selecting everything and just moving it as that is not possible in more complex arrangements) {the support shown are a downloaded from GF but any solid could be used as the basis for the block}

If all you are trying to do is keep the support attached to the pipe, you could simply group the pipe and supports together and call it a day.

When tried with PLANTPARTCONVERT, the support goes off the location. It is created butfar away from the intended location. Can you elaborate how do we do that please?

@h_eger
looks like you never made that video showing how the pick point is specified at a certain location
I see this has made it to a support article but still does NOT work

that method as mentioned puts the grips at some random VERY DISTANT location
(i thought i was pretty detailed in my explanation of the parts that dont work and that the PDO teams .xy filters also does not work)
So, if ...

"Dear @RichO,

For me, the block-based support via PLANTPARTCONVERT all work very well.
I would not change that."

we might have a different opinion on "work very well" and if it would need changing or not

hopefully you can make that video showing how this all functions "very well" including using the grips to relocate and rotate the support as req'd, looking forward to finding out what i missed so i can use this important feature, its not like its years later and we still cant add simple supports ... oh wait ... hmmmmmmmmm

if after you rotate the support to align with the pipe, you move the block to the origin, then explode it to solids and remake into a custom named block, then plant part convert and add 1 port on the x axis (make sure your support is aligned so that the x axis is along the support center-line), then create support using block from model, then the grips work as expected, plus if you need to modify the support you can create one with the new settings then explode and copy paste the new geom into the custom block you created using the block editor
