copying files to project puts files in another location????

I am trying to copy files into a project. Originally the files were in a main directory but wanted them moved to a subdirectory. I moved the files, removed the drawings from the project, copied the drawings into the project by finding them in a new directory. The result was that AutoCAD copied the files into the main directory again and reads the files from the original directory. IS there some way to fix this? Is there a radio button that needs to be checked before I copy the files into the project? Is there something in project setup that needs to be clicked on or off? I would like to have the files in the sub directory...

You set up the path for your DWG's in project settings. If you want to copy a DWG in use the project manager to do it. Right click on the folder and click "copy to project". In your project settings, under the "general settings", "paths" settings, You'll find where all your project DWG folders are pathed too. You can determine where DWG's you create or copy to the project will save here.

I understand how to copy files in my project. That wasn't my question. My question is how to I put my different P&ID's into different folders under one project? Is that possible or does every file have to go into one particular folder that is set up in the P&ID DWG directory?

Gotchya. Yes, for the connectivity they do go into the "pathed' file. the only other way to separate them would be to create another sub folder, within the pathed file. Then you could create and copy into those sub folders with in that pathed file. But you can't save outside of that path with out losing the smart functions of the dwg, otherwise you might as well just use CAD to do it.

So, if I have 100 schematics they all have to go into one file or I would have to have 100 different projects. That's kind of backwards thinking. Ok. I guess it is what it is.

Yes and no. The project setup allows you to dictate where the P&IDs are put when you create them. It will create a P&ID folder in that spot and place all p&IDs there. However, you can create additional folders under the P&ID hierarchy and create drawings in those subfolders for separating the P&IDs and it will create the same sub folders in that hierarchy where you set the output location.

I attached the 2 images the first shows the hierarchy in project manager. The circled category, is the folder generated by plant when you start a project. You can dictate in the setup when this generates. You can then create sub folders in the manager and drawings in those subfolders, which will be placed in the same hierarchy in the location you set for the P&IDS to be placed. It isn't ideal, but its better than just having 100 dwg all in one folder like you were saying.
