Check-in drawing with point cloud sections crashes AutoCAD

Hello everybody,

one of our customer has problems check-in drawings with point cloud sections. The check-in process crashes AutoCAD Plant 3D 2020.

Check-in drawings without point cloud sections works. The point cloud sections are created by our software As-Built for AutoCAD and stored into the dwg. The crash is not triggered in our software. Check-in a dwg with point cloud sections and unloaded As-Built for AutoCAD crashes as well. Any ideas how we can solve this?

 

I uploaded a sample project which should help to reproduce the crash.

Thanks a lot for your reply and for trying to help. I am a colleague of Axel (the product owner in his developer team).

After reading the ReCap forum post you provided and it's whole thread, I am not sure yet how this will help our As-Built for AutoCAD customer.
Our customers are using FARO As-Built for AutoCAD to model from point clouds. Their workflow includes the definition of point cloud sections inside AutoCAD using our As-Built tools. We are using the AutoCAD API to define the sections and save the section information in the DWG file. Our customer is now using VAULT to share their drawings. They would like to share the section information as well. But AutoCAD or AutoCAD Plant 3D crashes when they try to upload the DWG files to VAULT.
As ADN developers we would like to understand

* Why are DWG files with point cloud sections defined with As-Built are leading to crashes when uploading them to Vault?
* Are there are ways to help us as AutoCAD plugin developers to prevent these crashes?

is Udo Hädicke your product manager at Faro?

 

I'm not entirely sure if Faro As-Build is fully supported in Vault and BIM COLLABORATE PRO.

We have similar issues with BIM COLLABORATE PRO and uploading and checking in and out

Yes Udo is product manager at FARO. But he is responsible for other products than As-Built. Why are you asking?

How can we achieve that FARO As-Built For AutoCAD is supported by by Vault and BIM 360?

I still know Udo from my days at Autodesk.
Maybe he still has contacts to Autodesk development


How can we achieve that FARO As-Built For AutoCAD is supported by by Vault and BIM 360?

 

Contact the Autodesk developer teams Vault and BIM Collaboration and address these issues.
Maybe there is a quick fix for that.

We don't use FARO as-built, but we do use Plant 3D, point clouds, and vault.  We don't store the point cloud data in vault, only on a network drive.  It works fine.  We don't tend to cut up point clouds in recap, we only use the built in autocad tools for point cloud manipulation, but we do run it through recap for optimization.  Our point clouds tend to range between 500 MB to 2 TB per cloud.  We decided that trying to make incremental vault backups on check in/out of a terabyte file was nonsense.
