Draw Pipe in Elevation View

I am working on a piping diagram and when I change to a side or front/back view, I am unable to draw pipe horizontally or vertically (it runs off at an angle).  What setting am I missing to allow me to draw in the elevation view?  As an example, I want to draw a 12" diameter steam header 3 feet off the ground with multiple 6" valves coming off the top going to various connections.

I just did something and now I can't even draw them parallel to the XY plane in the top view.  Whatever I draw ends up at an angle into the Z plane.  Help!

Attached is what I am talking about.  I restarted MEP and began with a new template.  Even a short section of pipe is not showing up correctly...it's on an angle in the Z direction, resulting in the pipe ends showing.  What did I change to make it do this?

@mcawson

Check the slope in the properties palette.
