Cannot draw any AutoCAD MEP components (Duct, Pipe, etc.) on a AutoCAD drawing

I cannot draw any components of AutoCAD MEP on AutoCAD room plan, even when I zoom out and select an empty spot I still cannot draw any components. However, when I choose to draw lines, arc, file, regular AutoCAD components (not MEP), I do not have any issues drawing.

How can I use the MEP components on these types of drawings shown in the image? It is very crucial for me since in this case I will have to draw lines, rectangles, one by one, basically to make it look like a duct, pipe, etc., if I can use MEP components it will make everything 100 times faster. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @ddavulcu ,

Thanks for reaching out!

Let’s try to better understand what might be happening here before diving into potential solutions.

To help us assist you more effectively, could you please share a bit more background:

  1. Which version of AutoCAD MEP are you currently using, and when did you first notice this issue?

  2. Does this issue occur in all drawings, including a brand-new one created from scratch? Or is this specific to drawings originating from AutoCAD?

  3. If it only happens in specific files, would you be open to sharing one of the affected drawings with us? (Feel free to remove or redact any confidential or sensitive content.)

While we’re working to understand the scope of the issue, here’s a quick workaround you can try in the meantime :

  • Create a new drawing in MEP, then attach your existing room plan as an external reference (xref). This should allows you to place MEP components within the new drawing, while still using your original plan as a base.

Let us know how it goes, we’re happy to dig further once we have a bit more detail.

Best regards,
Yanhan
