Prevent BOM creation when using X-Refs

We are using AutoCAD Mechanical (2016) for our factory layout drawings and certain assembly drawings on factory level. We are using Inventor (2016) for our actual components.
All our data is managed in Vault Professional under Item based workflows.
For the factory assembly drawings we are using the BOM functionality of AutoCAD Mechanical.
Within these drawings we only make use of Part References and Block Part References. We do not use the X-Attach workflow.
In Vault Professional these drawings are assigned to an Item. The Item BOM is of course populated by data from the AutoCAD Mechanical BOM.
For the factory layouts we are not using the BOM functionality of AutoCAD Mechanical.
However the factory layouts are assigned to an Item. (This is a requirement of our ERP integration.)
In our current workflow the factory layout and the factory detailing drawings are independent entities without relationships between other drawings.
We are testing a new workflow for our layout drawings were we make use of X-Refs.
The factory layout will have X-Refs to the building drawing, the machinery drawing and multiple factory assembly drawings.
This is where the problems start...
Now that we are using X-Refs, AutoCAD Mechanical creates a BOM for the factory layout, which is in turn reflected in the Item BOM.
This behavior is completely logical, because we have actually followed the X-Attach workflow.
But for us, this is unwanted behavior.
So my question is:
Is there a way to prevent the creation of a BOM in AutoCAD Mechanical and/or in the Vault Item Master for our factory layouts?
We are looking for a way that does not bother the end user.
Switching between basic AutoCAD and Mechanical is not really a valid option for us.
