Dimensions do not move with attached objects

Hi Support,

I am facing tough time where I am doing iterations by adjusting various heights and distances. Everytime I move an object, the dimension remains at original position and I have to manually drag to the new point after moving items and its time consuming. I am doing lot of configurations. Is there a way like in Inventor, where dimensions get dragged along with object ? Few days ago I came across customer AutoCAD drawing which had  layer in pink called A-ANNO-DIMS. Is that standard layer or have to build custom one ? If custom, how do we set up rules for them ?

I am using 2018 version I am novice when it comes to layers and AutoCAD in general. Please help.

Thanks and Regards,

Yash

I am not getting your question clearly. Are you saying that the dimensions don't move even after moving the object. Can you send us a drawing to see what is happening here ?

There is a dimupdate feature in AutoCAD. Did you check that out. One below says how it works within AutoCAD,

Hi Vinod,

Please find below a sample of drawing I am working on. If you move the man standing, the dim remains pointing at blank spot. Doesn't move with man.

I will check the dimupdate command and the link.

Thanks for your help.

Yash

DIMASSOC variable controls whether dims stick to objects or not, assuming the dims where actually snapped to the objects.

Hi Pendean,

Whenever I type enter dimassoc as you mentioned, it asks me enter the value of dimassoc and default value is 1. Do I select dim first and then enter command ?

Hello,

The default of DIMASSOC sysvar should be 2.
Please check this link for details:
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Functi...
Please change it to 2, and try out the same operation and check if now the dimensions update and move with the object.
Just checking if the dimensions are snapped to the object that you are moving.

Hope this helps.

Thank You,

Hi Gaurav,

Not sure what I am doing wrong but even after changing dimassoc to 2, dimension still doesn't move with object. Will it be easier to send through copy of it here ? And you can see. So, its not yet solved. Please see attached drawing in 2018 version.

Thanks.

Hi @Yashasvi23481,

Thank you for providing the file. I was able to check your dimensions and found in the properties that your dimensions are not associative. Unfortunately, I was not able to reassociate them. However, once I changed the variable DIMASSOCIATE to 2 and replaced the dimensions, they were now associative.

Please let me know if this works for you.

All the best,

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for your help. Is there an updated drawing you can provide with changes. I will check the drawings I have, by applying those mods.

Hi Cheryl and Gaurav,

Thank you for valuable inputs. It all works well now. I tried moving object and dimension is updated. Not a query, but for my own knowledge, how do you change associativity, it was greyed out. Is there a command for that ?

Yash

Hi @Yashasvi23481,

Thank you for the update and for marking the solution!  The only way I know of to change non-associative dimensions to associative, is using the DIMREASSOCIATE command.  While nearly any dimension can be made non-associative, I believe some non-associative dimension may not be able to be made associative.

Hi, I came across this thread because I had the same problem, only my dimassoc is already at 2.

My dimensions followed the objects along the Y axis, but are stuck there, they don't follow on the X axis or Z.

Now I tried setting dimassoc to 0 and back to 2, but now the dimensions don't follow at all, they remain stationary.

However, I can group them to the objects and that works for now.

But I would like my Autocad to work properly, any ideas why it would do that?
