Hyperlink not working since upgrade

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi,

Since a recent upgrade from mechanical 2017 to 2018 my hyperlinks have stopped working.

The hyperlinks are attached to blocks inserted from toolpalettes which were created in a previous version of cad. The error code is "hyperlink destination cannot be found", but the destination is the same and is looking in the correct place, for example -

C:\HSS\Contracts Engineering\Designs\505\5050004.dwg

to fix this i edited the hyperlink and browsed to the same dwg location and the hyperlink then works, but nothing has changed. the location is exactly the same? -

C:\HSS\Contracts Engineering\Designs\505\5050004.dwg

I could edit all the hyperlinks like this but there are hundreds. Does anyone know away around this?

Thanks,

Danny

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting. If you have not already done so, updating AutoCAD Mechanical 2018 may resolve this issue. There are 2 updates that need to be applied, one for Mechanical and one for core AutoCAD.  All the latest updates can be downloaded from your Autodesk Account under product updates.

Please let me know if this works for you or not.

All the best,

Hi @Anonymous,

I apologize for asking about this again, I've encountered a lot of misunderstandings lately about the difference between upgrade and updates. If you type ABOUT in the command line are these the product version and built on numbers you see?

ACADM 2018 updates.PNG

If you do have both updates installed, Great!! The next thing I can think of to check is the pathing of your hyperlinks, are they set to relative paths?

If you type HYPERLINK then choose your object and enter, at the bottom of the dialog window is a check box for "relative path for hyperlink". Uncheck the box if it is checked. The nice thing about this is you can edit multiple objects at one time.

Let me know if this works for you.

If my post was helpful, Kudos are always welcome.

Hi Cheryl,

Yes i have those product version and built on numbers.

My hyperlinks are not relative.

I thought it might have something to do with the tool palettes on insertion, but i opened the original block file and its the same.

Could it be anything to do with the new 2018 dwg file format?

Hi @Anonymous,

I am sorry that did not work. I have not heard anything about tool palette links being broken due to version changes.

I did some additional research, and keep finding solutions that indicate for some people Relative path OFF works and for some Relative path ON works.

Maybe try turning it on if it was already off?

I will need to do some research on this one.

Have a great weekend! All the best,

Hi @Anonymous,

I wanted to check in with you to see if switching to a Relative path on your tools got them working again?

Another couple things you could check are in the OPTIONS dialog box:

Are your tool palette blocks in the folder that is listed under the Files tab, Tool Palette File Locations?

If not, is the folder listed under the Trusted Locations and Support File Search Path?

Hi,

I did try and change the path to relative, but i couldn't because the tick box was greyed out so i couldn't switch it off or on.

Another thing i have noticed is that when i select the target button i get an error saying-

"AutoCAD could not open this file or could not parse a file of this type."

The file type the hyperlink is looking for is a PDF.

Would this have anything to do with it?

Hi @Anonymous,

What you are encountering sounds very unusual. I tested a PDF link in one of my blocks, but did not see the error.  Would it be possible for you to create a ScreenCast showing ?

Can you tell me if any of the blocks or files are stored on the local drive or network location?

Is the folder that contains the blocks included in the Trusted Locations in OPTIONS?

How did you initially add the blocks to the Tool Palettes?

All the best,

Hi,

I think i have solved the issue whilst making the screen cast i was going to send.

When making the screen cast to show the locations in our vault (EPDM vault) i opened the source PDF the hyperlink was looking at, then when i went back to the autocad block the hyperlink worked!

It seems that when we did a recent upgrade to ACADM 2018 the hyperlink was somehow broken. Opening all the source PDF's fixes the links.

Thanks for you help on this. Probably would of given up and not solved it if i hadn't tried making the screen cast.

You are quite welcome, that's Fantastic news!  This is the third (or maybe forth) time someone has reported a problem was resolved while creating a ScreenCast 😄
