How to change/update the drafting standard used on existing symbols?

I have a drawing that used the ANSI drafting standard on weld symbols. I have a new KCI ANSI standard I would like to use instead. If I place a new weld symbol it uses the new KCI ANSI standard but existing symbols wont change to the new standard and match properties does nothing.

  1. At the Command prompt, enter AMOPTIONS.
  2. In the Options dialog box, select the AM:Standards tab.
  3. From the Standards list, select a new standard. Then choose OK.
Note: None of the drawing objects that exist at the time the standard is switched are affected. Only the new objects you draw follow the standard you switched to. (This is what I am trying to do, switch existing objects to a new standard)

Hi @Jason.Rugg,

Thank you for posting your question in the forums, I am happy to help.

The parameters of symbols and AutoCAD Mechanical specific objects are determined at the time of creation, and are based on the drafting standard that is set as current at that time. Since the different drawing standards require different information, the standard of an object is fixed. See the following Autodesk Knowledge Network (AKN) article:

To Change the Current Drafitng Standard (AutoCAD Mechanical)

If a different drawing standard is required, the object should be recreated.  Please let me know if this helps explain the issue.

All the best,

One workaround is to just edit the existing drafting standard to match the desired standard, this allows existing objects to update to match a new standard.

Hi @Jason.Rugg,

Thank you for sharing your workaround. I am very glad your standard is based on the current standard.

Standards can be modified, however, if the new standard is significantly different (for example, one based on ISO rather than ANSI), the data positions, symbols, and notations would be based on the one you are modifying, so they may not match the new standard.
