Copy and then paste pastes something not copied

AutoCAD Mechanical 2015

I have a label created in Adobe Illustrator CS5. I want to import a facsimile of the label, it doesn't have to be a precise representation, into an AutoCAD Mechanical drawing. The mechanical drawing conveys other details for the label producer like overall dimensions, material, rollup etc.

I export from Illustrator into a .dwg (or a .dxf). I open this drawing in AutoCAD and it looks exactly what I want. So far so good.

I then highlight and copy. I move to the main drawing and paste. What I get is an artifact of the label as it existed almost 7 years ago. Really strange.

I've tried the Purge command. Save --> Close --> Reopen. Same problem.

I've tried both .dwg and .dxf drawings. Same problem.

I've tried converting the drawing to a block, and the block icon looks exactly like a mini representation of the label as I want it. I then paste the block into the main drawing and I get the 7 year old artifact.

Been around this loop dozens of times. Any pointers appreciated.

Looks like you try to copy /paste a block form one drawing to another.
If they have the same name the block will the same.
Try to rename the block form to one that is correct or purge the block from the main drawing.

Hi Robert,

Thank you for the response. I did work to make sure they had unique block names. Though I fail to understand adequately the entire Design Center interface associated with Blocks.

After I posted the initial note it occurred to me I had this exact same problem with these files (both the .ai and the .dwg) the last time I had to update the label (about 5 or 6 years ago). The solution I came up with then was to copy/paste the main drawing over to the .dwg version of the label. I implemented this approach again and now I have the drawing I need but really don't understand the issues underlying all of this.

I don't think I'll be needing to update this label for another 5 or 6 years 🙂
