SDE Layer file change from 2018 to 2021

Excuse me for not being well versed in this area.  I'm more of a Civil 3D user.  But this feature is definitely a Map 3D one.

I have a client who just updated to Civil 3D 2021 from 2018.  They created a lot of .SDE layer files that work well in 2018 (or previous versions), but in 2021 they will not work.  Is there a way to globally updated these files to 2021?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The old SDE files are no longer supported.  You can connect directly to the database with SQL Server, but you loose the Versioning...
